  • With the addition of Dave Krusen on drums, the band took the name Mookie Blaylock, in reference to the then-active All-Star basketball player. The band played its first official show at the Off Ramp Café in Seattle on October 22, 1990,[13] and soon signed to Epic Records. However, concerns about trademark issues necessitated a name change; the band's name became "Pearl Jam".[7] In an early promotional interview, Vedder said that the name "Pearl Jam" was a reference to his great-grandmother Pearl, who was married to a Native American and had a special recipe for peyote-laced jam.[14] In a 2006 Rolling Stone cover story however, Vedder admitted that this story was "total bullshit" (even though he indeed had a great-grandma named Pearl). Ament and McCready explained that Ament came up with "pearl", and that the band later settled on "Pearl Jam" after attending a concert by Neil Young, in which he extended his songs as improvisations of 15-20 minutes in length, a practice known as jamming.[2]

    From TwoFeetThick's concert chronology:

    03/10/91 – KISW: Seattle, WA (Ed & Jeff) [5m]
notes: Ed and Jeff announce that the band is now called Pearl Jam on KISW’s New Music Hour. They say they are going into the studio the following day and the ‘Release’ and ‘Once’ demos are played.

Also to note that 2 days earlier they played a show in Seattle still by the name Mookie Blaylock. Also, the day after they announced the band's name as Pearl Jam, they began recording Ten.

Hence the Pearl Jam 20th anniversary will be in 2011, not 2010 like everyone is saying... ;)

Not quite. The 10th anniversary show was Oct 22,2000. The 20th Anniversary show will be Oct 22, 2010. If by some bizzare reason they don't play that date, that will still be the 20th anniversary of the band. For HOF purposes, sure, it's 2011. But we all know Pearl Jam kicked off as a band on Oct 22, 1990 even if it was as Mookie Blaylock.

Well, we are talking about two different anniversaries. One is the first time the band played live, and that is 10/22/90. And, the second is the anniversary of the original release of Ten, which is 8/27/91.
