So, with the "economy" so bad...

I hate to use the "E" word. Some people are fine financially, some aren't for different reasons. I make terrible money after losing my job in late 2007 and have fallen into a deep dark hole of debt. I used to be able to afford to pay my credit card bills, now I am in collections... went from making about 40K a year to... well... an hourly rate that is embarrassing to even mention (but whatever, $9 an hour). So... here's my point...

I have scoured the internet for opportunities to work at home or freelance somehow in different ways. All are scams or want you to buy something. I don;t really have time to work another job at night because I have a baby coming shortly and we're getting ready for that. So I was wondering...

Is there a legitimate opportunity to make some extra money on the internet? If so where and how? I am literally looking to make an extra $100 a week somehow (legally of course). If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. It's obviously I'm desperate or I wouldn't be posting here.

Happy Holidays...

  • Please take my suggestion with a grain of salt. . . it is not for everyone and could get you in even more trouble.

I'm a college student in my senior year that has been on his own since high school ended. Mommy and daddy couldn't help front the bill for tuition like all my other friends, so I had to do it myself. I wake up in the morning and go to classes. When classes get out I go to work and wait tables. Waiting tables is very nice because you have cash in your pocket at the end of every shift and Uncle Sam doesn't need to know if you aren't completely honest about how much you made in tips. The economy hasn't seemed to have hit bottom hard enough to keep people from leaving decent tips for good service and sometimes when the store is busy I can make about 20 bucks an hour. This isn't always enough though.

After work, I usually come home and play online poker. I am well versed enough in poker that my gains outweigh my losses and I can usually depend on an extra 80-140 bucks a week from playing. If you are well versed in the game and now how to play the game smart, I suggest you do the same as me. It has helped me make ends meet many times before when it seemed like they wouldn't. Winnings can be transferred into a paypal account which then can be transferred into your bank account.

I know it's not the best advise, but it's the best I can do. I wish you the best in making it through your time of tribulation. I wish there was a better answer for good people under bad circumstances.

Thanks for the reply. Online poker didn;t work for me... 3 years ago. :0) Ahem... but waiting tables, yes, that can be lucrative and tax free if you're in the right spot. Unfortunately I live in a small shit town where people are tight.
  • I make a little selling on eBay. I started by selling my belongings. The experience from selling my own DVDs and toys taught me enough about those categories that I now buy new DVDs and toys to re-sell at a profit. (I'm a Flipper!)

When I have money to buy stock, I can make $100-200 each month. But if I'm too broke to buy, I can't sell....it's a very tenuous cycle! If there's an item that you are familiar with, you can start with that and branch out as you become more successful.

Sign up with as many market research firms in your area. If you play your cards right and qualify for the studies, you can make some extra money. Surveys can pay from 30 up to 300 dollars.

Good luck brother. If you want, send me your address and I'll mail you some cash.

I haven't actually read this article, but thought I'd post the link in case it's helpful at all:

  • One thing that I used to do, but have gotten away from now with a family, was refereeing hockey games. I'd do one or two mens league games a night for like $30 cash per game. In my single days, I was making $200+ a week (tax free) and most of the time it was easy money.

So if you have a sports background, you might want to check into that idea.

  • You might want to see how much you can sell your plasma for. I was going to try it once, in the spring of 2008: I arrived at the facility at 1 pm. The employee told me I needed to arrive at 6 am. The hours didn't work for me, I never went back.

The two labs in the L.A. area only pay about $20. The last time I looked, it was $20 for the first 'donation' each week, then $25 for the second if the person was willing to go twice a week. However, one lab pays a LOT more if a person has antibodies to some nasty viruses in his blood. If one has recovered from any of a long list of diseases, the lab will pay $75-$150 per donation. If one has recently been vaccinated with Hepatitis B, the lab pays $75. For a recent Anthrax vaccinee, they pay something like $150 or $200.

I've never tried selling plasma, so I can't describe the reality of it. But I can testify that selling recyclables is an easy way to make a tiny bit of money. I make $5 a week helping myself to the plastic bottles and aluminum cans that my neighbours throw away in the recycle bins down in the apartment basement.

    Every little bit helps.

I could use a little bit of extra cash and have been meaning on doing this. I know some people who do this. I just have to find out where and then see if they'll take my blood. I'm on several meds. and have epilepsy.
I know I could use the cash, but I can't work part time or anything that I have to promise a certain amount of time. In selling blood, if for some reason i can't make it to the place, no big deal.

    Adam,

Do you have any skills? What can you bring to the table? I myself pretty much take any "extra" work I can get, I don't care what it is. Some weeks I don't get any work but others I make up for it. It all depends what you are willing to do.
Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?
