Corduroy and Even Flow- same boat?

Like Even Flow, I think Corduroy is an overplayed song. It seems every boot I put in, its track 3 like clockwork and usually skip it. BUT, when its played live and I'm there, IT FUCKEN ROCKS.

So, my question is this: Should they retire Corduroy (like they should with Even Flow ;) ) or keep it rocken?

  • when ever i make a disc of studio songs by pearl jam for my other music loving friend I never include Jeremy or alive or even flow - i know that they have heard these songs enough - I want to expand their pearl jam catalogue and give them awesome tracks that if they had never heard of pj and heard a track like Got Some or Love Boat Captain or Sometimes they blow their mind then are like wow i didn't pearl jam did those or song like that
Corduroy is on alot of boots and it does get some radio rotaion - i love alive and jeremy and even flow and seeing Mike play the solo for the former behind his head at Bonnaroo was stellar - but with out them how could newbies get turned on to the best band on the planet? If PJ really retired any song from their catalogue and it some teenagers first show seeing them live and they didn't play Corduroy or Even Flow they would be the ones missing out, not you and I - sure we hear all the notes and tempo changes in our sleep and as new and awesome as Backspacer is I remember when Vitology was that for me - Corduroy is simply excellent rock and roll
    Keep on rockin it

I remember an interview a couple of years back where Mike said Corduroy was his least favorite song to play. You'd never know it from watching him play, and this is one of those songs that I always enjoy. Personally, I'd like to keep it in the rotation.

It seems like a song that really shocases his talents.

Doesn't matter how many shows you've been to, someone at that show has never seen Pearl Jam live before. These songs have to be played at most shows for the concert noobs. It would be like going to a Skynyrd show and not hearing Free Bird, it just wouldn't be right. I think we as fans are fortunate enough PJ has a wide range of music to play at shows. Having to sit through 15-20 min of music that is mundane to you isn't bad considering the average PJ show last 2 hrs.

No, no, I wasn't saying Corduroy was mundane. I was replying to those who thought it was. I happen to love Corduroy. It's Do the Evolution I can live without.

  • I went to 7 shows in 06, heard corduroy a bunch of times (6 I think), and on countless bootlegs over the years

going into this 09 tour, the number one song i wanted to hear was corduroy. only got it once out of 3 shows.

WORST IDEA EVER TO retire it

evenflow however, doesnt really do anything for me live or on boots.

Maybe if you all start showing up with "Play Evenflow you pussies" signs they'll stop playing it. Personally I like it but I could do without Corduroy.

Please, PJ, don't retire any song, ever!

There's always gonna be newer fans in the audience, or even older fans who haven't had the chance to see PJ live yet at their first show that want to get the chance to hear everything!

Quite honestly, I don't know how anyone can get sick of a live song!

keep evenflow too...it's my pee break song :D
No time to be void or save up on life...you've got to spend it all.
  • Nah, Corduroy, Even Flow, Alive, all of 'em should stay for ever.

If you take into account that only about 10% of any rock audience know more than half of the songs they are seeing, they have to stay. You think these people want to hear 'Sweet Lew' and 'Whale Song' getting cranked out instead? No chance. For that matter, neither do I. The intro to Corduroy still makes my hairs stand on end with anticipation even after all these years.
we're all going to the same place...

Retire is a strong word. I'd like them to be more selective with Corduroy. ;)

Adelaide '09 is my only Corduroy free show. I've seen the band play Melbourne 8 times, and have had Corduroy every time.
  • never retire any songs. period.

I don't think they should retire any song, but I admit to skipping Corduroy almost every time I am listening to a boot.

Maybe just change its location because you are right, it is almost always in the top 3 tracks.

There is not a better song in the PJ catalog for getting the crowd worked up. Corduroy is a staple for good reason. It is impossible to not get swept up in it when you see it live. Kinda like GTF, it just creates this ebb and flow wave of energy that is infectious.

    KEEP IT ROCKIN'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My all-time favourite song to hear live. I would actually be really disappointed if I was at a show and they DIDN'T play Corduroy. Luckily I'm 7-for-7.

The song rocks live and should always be played. It was also the first song I ever saw Pearl Jam play live in person (Barrie '98) and I've been in love with the live versions since.....

    When I hear those first 4 or 5 notes come screaming off of Eddie's guitar . . . . . . CHILLS. Everytime.

I'm gonna say Rearviewmirror is the quintessential Pearl Jam song, but Corduroy is a good contendor. Those are probably two songs that serve as a good litmus test whether someone is a PJ fan or not.

I was over Even Flow for a while too, now I'm back in love with it.

If I HAD to have one or these songs at a live show it would be Even Flow. :D
