It's been pretty miserable up here. Wasn't on much yesterday so didn't see the thread. Fortunately in the town that I live, Penrith, we've done ok, although we put sandbags against the front door just in case. A village just outside where I have friends living was affected quite badly, 6 foot of water has trashed her downstairs and she's only lived there about 18 months and just done it all up. Another friend in the same village (but a little higher up) texted to say they'd been without power since yesterday lunch time. The mountain rescue helicopters have been going through the night evacuating people etc.
Most of the schools were shut yesterday and shut early Thursday (my son was very happy about this), but everyone is working really hard to get it all sorted. We've even got Gordon Brown up here today.
Near us, Appleby, the flood siren sounded wednesday and a colleague running a clinic had to leave or be stuck, but things really hit Thursday, someone I work with was doing a clinic in Keswick and she was sent back here as all but 1 road was blocked to get into the town and that was starting to flood. Then a couple of hours later it was Cockermouth, so anyone working here from there was sent home.
Everyone I know is safe, thank goodness.
I PM'd 'Dave Grolsch' this morning as he's up here too and he's in one of the more badly affected areas than I am but not heard anything yet. Hopefully all is well his end.
Thanks for thinking of us all up here.
The internet connection has just came back on,sorry if i made anybody anxious..ya soft lot!
My beautiful home county has indeed took a battering!
we are used to a lot of rain but this is just unreal!
I live in Workington where sadly the brave policeman was killed when the bridge collapsed,i drive over there just about everyday and they have shut the next two road bridges along the river derwent due to similar concerns so god knows how i,m getting to work monday.
Hopefully no one else is hurt though!
ps-the British emergency services are amazing arent they!
Both north and south of where our apartment is over there (where my dad lives when he works there) has had trouble with rain. There was a mudslide just north of him that had closed part of the highway and theres a few towns that are flooded just south of him where high tides and rising rivers haven't helped the rainfall, its all flooded... people are kayaking around in teh streets its crazy.
definitely a wet november, stay safe all of you.
Sounds bad their too. Take care.
All the bridges are damaged, collapsed or shut for inspection, this means for me to cross a river i can throw a stone across a ninety mile one way trip :( and thats if the A66 remains open.
You can all imagine the disruption to business never mind ambulances and kids getting to school etc
Workington has a population of around 50,000 so the chaos monday morning is gonna be immense
This will take years to sort even if the cash is made available
A woman has gone missing in Brecon,Wales, really sad times.
Hope everyone everywhere stays safe!
