No auto-login, history in forums?

Hi,

I've been in the forums for a couple months, and every time I'd come back it would automatically log me in, which meant that View New Messages actually made sense. Starting about a week ago or so, it all stopped working. It doesn't log me in, which also means that when I *do* log in, it doesn't have a history of my past visits, and therefore shows New Messages as "0".

I haven't changed anything in my browser or security software, but it sounds like cookies aren't being set. My big question is: Is anyone else experiencing this, or is it just my setup for some reason?

Thanks in advance,
Envoy

You might not have changed anything in your browser, but depending on how your browser is set up, it's possible an automatic browser did. For example, Firefox is capable of automatically updating itself. It is possible that the default setting of an update is set to a higher security setting than you had previously. I don't think this is the case, but it is possible.

Other possibilities (and they depend on what browser you're using, what version of the browser, and what operating system, amongst other things...)

    1. Someone else used your computer with/without your knowledge and changed your security settings or cleared out your history.

    2. An OS update cleared out your cookies/temporary internet files

    3. You ran an anti-virus program or utility tool that cleared out your cookies

    4. It's something else and I'm not even close.

I think there may be some confusion about the View New Messages thing and why it is showing "0" though. To my knowledge New Messages are only present if someone is PMing you and you have an unread message in your Inbox. The fact that you log in does not mean that there is a message waiting for you. If someone sends you a message and you have read the message, it will not show up as a new message waiting to be read (at the top of the web page) even if you did not delete it. It will say "0 new messages" at the top of the web page. Only if you have unread messages will they show up at the top of the web page as View New Messages.

Assuming that you're talking about your browser history when you say "history of past visits," if you, someone else, or a utility program cleared your browser's history, this would account for the fact that you can't look at previously viewed pages or do an auto-login.

Your browser history of past visits is completely unrelated to any messages which may or may not be waiting for you.

Hope that helps. If not, please ask some more questions to clarify what I've missed/assumed away.

    Hey HH,

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've had a crazy week and not much time to reply to you know, but wanted to say a big thanks for taking the time. You touched on all the usual suspects, but I'll keep mucking around...

Edit to add: just checked on my laptop and it seems like the cookies, etc, are working there. My desktop is running into problems, so it is definitely not the forum. Ugh. Oh well, I'll work it out...

    Best,
