I used to get them every now and again, but not anymore.

I became conscious of a few things and they've pretty much gone away.

    1) Change your toothbrush more frequently ... and don't forget to change your travel toothbrush!
    2) Don't drink out of the same plastic bottle a lot, you know, for those folks that keep one at work or at the gym ... either get rid of them or wash them out frequently.
    3) If you have a water container / juice container in your fridge, wash it out once every few weeks.

I seem to have them from time to time. Funny enough, they seem to follow my allergies! If my allergies flare up, I have more problems.
When I do have them, they drive me nuts!
But that thing about changing your toothbrush more often--how often are you supposed to? I thought you were supposed to use a new one every month. Then I bought a package of 4 at the drug store a few weeks ago and it said "dentists recommend changing your toothbrush every 3 months." So now I'm really confused! :?

This is what I use when I have cold sores (or canker sores, whatever you want to call them):

It seems to heal them faster.

I do remember-- from a college biology class on diseases--that a canker sore is supposed to be like having herpes in your mouth. :o so no oral sex, soulsinging!!--not until its gone!

Common misconception. For the most part ...

Canker sores are inside your mouth, and are usually bacterial in nature.

Cold sores are on the outside of your mouth, those are the ones that mean you're a dirty bird (herpes related).

soulsinging, try putting a wet tea bag on it. it sounds dumb, but I used to get them when I was little and it helped a lot.

yeah, but theoretically speaking, don't you think the canker sore and the cold sore would be somewhat related?
that maybe modern science just hasn't completely explored that possibility yet? i'm just sayin'. any thoughts on it?

When was the last time you changed it?

I'm telling you ... it's bacterial, a few small things go a long way.

okay, so karma is a bitch. :( woke up this morning with a sore throat and a bunch of canker sores---just like a week or so after I gave you some shit about them. thought you might enjoy that info, soulsinging :D had to share. and its all because I went through like 5 pieces of that Wrigley cinnamon gum--tore my tongue up!! didn't brush or anything before going to bed because I worked a 10 hour day all the way up until last night--and fell asleep before my head hit the pillow! damn canker sores! sanitized them suckers good :D
  • I might be wrong on this, but I swear I heard somewhere that swishing with warm water with some salt in it helps. Definitely yucky, but probably worth the minute or so of grossness to get rid of those annoying little bastards!

You can try a product called Glyoxide. It's a mouth antiseptic that also numbs the sore area. You can get it over the counter in the US. Not sure about outside the US.

In case you're interested, for cold sores, you need to take l-lysine (an amino acid). You can get that in any health food store and many pharmacies. It is also over the counter.

Yeah they are a fucking bitch, best thing is just to ride it out im afraid, i've tried so many hoem remedies to temporarily numb them or even help try to get rid of them but nothing works. Just dont use mouthwash and dont rub it with your toothbrush as it make it worse, so may have to avoid cleaning a section of your mouth for a bit lol.

Don't eat tomatos! It not only aggravates them, it will make them appear!
