No, it is an absolute con. Its always better buying when possible, locally grown produce from a source with a good reputation.

the quality of the fruit is directly related to the quality of the nutrients in the soil. and the rest of its environment.

funny....and yet, i am lost. how does this relate? :| :?

btw - it's not a 'con' in reference to my question...i am asking about FLAVOR. does organic taste better to you, or not? that's all.
i agree, buying local is better for the planet....tho one could argue that organic is better for you always - no pesticides....tho if it's organic but from columbia...not so good for the planet. however, i am only asking about TASTE.

I see, it is not in my opinion any better tasting. Which is why I see it as a con. I know a farmer who told me he was saving money by being organic yet prices are higher. But anyway, going off the point.

well alrighty, thanks...that was what i am curious about. i wonder if i blindly ate organic/non-organic....which i would consisently choose to be better tasting. as another poster said above tho, i am sure the flavor depends on more than just being organic, or not. tho i have to say, when i garden at home (and we garden organically) that produce ALWAYS tastes waaayyyy better, but again, can be more than just being organic. seriously tho, the organic raspberries i had were probably in the top 5 batches of raspeberries i have EVER eaten, they were THAT good. sadly, not locally grown tho. this time of year in my neck of the woods....not much fruit in season, and yea...i love my fruit.

The problem is that our taste was already changed by industry food. We are not used to the 'original' taste anymore and consider organic food as tasting less good.....

see, what i posted is the exact opposite of what you're saying tho. i am finding, albeit from my limited experience with organics, that the organic produce - well at least the fruit i've had - tastes far BETTER thn the regular stuff i grew up on, accustomed to....

  • My wife is on some new kinda freaky diet where she is MANDATED to have organic vs other fruit.

Does regular fruit had more fat in them :?

    no.
nutrionally, they are one and the same...tho there are arguements that some think local/organic might have more nutrients, but it is unproven. however, perhaps there is some theory that the pesticides on produce may in some way, chemicaly, make the body hold onto more calories or sumthin'? idk....just puttin' it out there. i think any diet that mandates organics simply does so b/c it is believed 'healthier' in general.

Oh and to make myself look a bit strange, I am a keen organic gardener but only because of its environmental bnefits. I still stand by the fact that my neighbours potatoes taste as good as mine and he uses modern chemicals. Being grown at home makes it taste alot better.

    i fully agree with this.
and hey, i would not relly think organic would 'taste better'...except that seems to be my experience, at least with store-bought produce. thus, i am curious...

Well maybe it does taste better to certain people. Maybe its one of those try it for your self things. I myself try to buy local produce but do not see the benefits of organic.

On reflection maybe its just down to everyone to see whats best for them.

    sure.
thus again, my curiosity. i just wonder amongst those who HAVE bought/eaten organics...do they find it taste better, or is it just me? btw - i more than likely won't be switching to organices 100% even if i find it does taste better, consistently, simply b/c my wallet cannot handle that expense for it ALL. even regular fruit, tastes good enough. ;) hhahaha. i am in it for taste, sure...but mostly, nutrition.

More often than not organic fruit and veggies are going to be better.
Not always, but most of the time...from my experience.

Local will still trump either options at a grocery store.

    Here's how I see it...

    Local-organic > Local-non = "Organic"> Non organic
  • It may taste better, but it increases the risk of parasites. My dad works for State Disability and he knows personally of 3 separate cases of people that got parasites from organic produce. One person is going blind because the parasite made its way into her brain
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

usually organic fruit does taste better. i try to buy local organic fruit from farmers i know. but, the best fruit/veggies comes from either
local organic farmers who use heirloom seeds or from my own garden!

What I've tried does taste better, especially tomatoes. A lot of regular ones just taste of water. But yep I think that where they are grown, soil types etc does have a lot to do with it. I would buy more organic if I had a bit more money.

I know. I personally agree with this, too but I'm just about to read a book about nutrition and there researcher's were looking for a reason why so many people prefer industry stuff and go to McDonalds and Co. I myself don't belong to that group but I was just so impressed / angry by what I have read so far.....

I think they do because conventional fruit is grown for appearance, not taste. I mean seriously, what has happened to apples? They're HUGE and RED and SHINY and then you bite into them and you might as well be eating mealy cardboard. Bleck.

but there is so much food that industry puts chemicals in that enhances taste (whatever that should mean) and sometimes even stuff that makes people addicted to a certain kind of product

Agree on both these points - esp. the apples that you mention and esp. red delicious. They suck. And strawberries.

I'm not going to go with a blanket 'yes organics taste better' because I've eaten plenty of non-organic stuff that tasted fine. Also, my motivation for choosing organic when I do is getting less exposure to chemicals in the forms of insecticide, fungicide and the like, as well as fertilizer. To me that is more of an important point than only the taste.

Sound like the book you're reading is Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. That's a great one. The shorter version of it meant for teens is called Chew On This! I read passages from it during a Children's Literature course in college whe I was assigned to cover non-fiction. The professor was rolling her eyes the whole time, sighing, and said, "That's propaganda!" She lowered my grade for the entire course from an A to a B because she disapproved so much. I had to fight for months to restore the A I had earned!

    Truth can be dangerous.

    agreed.

just from my limited exposure, the organics i have eaten have tasted better...but i am sure there are variations. and the only reason i bought organic was once, it was all they had and it was an amazing price! and the other times, b/c apparently my market has difficulty getting decent non-organic bananas... :P

my non-organic clementine just tasted awesome. 8-)

Im eating a non organic carrot right now and I have to say half the taste is fucking chemicals. I washed it and peeled the outside and it still tastes like shit....

Do organic vegetables get rid of that nasty chemical taste??
