So I'm going to see Them Crooked Vultures in Portland next week. Anyone who has seen them I already: what should I expect?

Do they just stick to the album or are there any unexpected gems (covers/QOTSA/Foos/Zep/whatever)? Is there anything that stands out that I should NOT be in the beer/bathroom line when they play it? Is Alain with them? How many encores (if any)? I half expect Homme and Grohl to mix up drumming and guitar duty for something special, but that's probably asking too much...

Haven't seen them but I've watched concert footage and youtube stuff. They haven't played anything from their other bands. You don't want to be waiting in line for a beer when they start playing Warsaw. And Alain is on rhythm guitar but plays the lead parts during the verses while Josh is singing.

  • expect a great rock concert. dave stays on drums. alain plays rhythm guitar and bass on "nobody loves me". no encores. they play the entire album. little stage banter from josh. "interlude with ludes" provides a nice break from the rock assault.

Pretty much what I expected... I've seen QOTSA a couple of times and they always sound good, so I would expect that from this group.
  • when i saw them they played about 80 mins and stuck to their TCV material. i wouldnt make any beer runs...
    I miss you hippiemom.

I was at Monday nights club show at the ROXY in Hollywood and last nights Record Release Show at the Wiltern in LA. Monday was cool, kinda like a party. Rocked the eff out. Last nights KICK OFF SHOW was GREAT!! Got all the lights and effects with the stage that we didn't have at the Roxy. TON's of Zeppelin fans at the show, I mean TONS. No, TCV didn't meander into any Zeppelin, Nirvana or QOTSA (I'm glad they didn't). Yes, Alain played and he is just incredible. All the guys seem to really love being up there together, really enjoying themselves. Hope you have a great time at the shows!! I was lucky enough to get JOHN PAUL JONES to sign my copy of the CD..................eeeek! OH and....................they did do one ENCORE last night.....and Josh said "this is our very first Encore"..........he's cool as fuck!

I saw them the last two nights in Los Angeles. They only have the one CD so that is what you get (plus 'Highway One'). They did shuffle up the setlist to make it seem like two different shows.
What you DO get is some of the most incredible jam sessions you will ever witness. They just seem to wing it, following the lead of the deftly adept rhythm section of Grohl and Jones.
Go in with no expectations (if that is possible) and just enjoy the show... it is one of the greatest exhibitions of Rock music... steming from the branch of 70's stoner rock... you will see today.
    ...
In a nutshell... they whip a horse's ass with a belt.

  • Christ, I'm stoked for this. You're all probably right about the beer runs... I'll just have to make it go ahead of time.

Homme fuckin personifies cool. He makes it look easy. And he obviously has a good time.

Thanks everyone! I'll throw up some horns for everyone here.
