Gay Marriage - For a term paper, help is appreciated.

I'm writing a position argument for pro-gay marriage for my term paper in my English class. I know this is a heavily debated topic, but in Utah it's enormous. I was hoping that anyone who wouldn't mind responding will do so, the turn-out would be helpful in my gathering of research.

I didn't start this thread to get anyone heated up, so please be respectful when answering. If you feel the need to say something hateful, please refrain and simply don't reply.

Are you for or against gay marriage? Why?

Do you feel that not allowing gay marriage is against our constitutional rights?

Thanks everyone!

I'm in support of gay marriage but, sorry, I just don't feel like formulating any intelligent thoughts on the subject right now. Instead, I'll show you an interesting recent news story that may or may not be relevant to your paper. Have you seen this?

Great topic. I am completely and totally for same-sex marriages. I have a quite a few friends who are gay and I love them just the way that they are. There is no difference in the goals between a same-sex marriage and a hetero marriage. It's basic constituent parts are the same: two people who love each other and commit to spend their lives together (whether or not the marriage is successful is a 50/50, gay or straight).

I honestly do not understand why there is such a backlash against people of the same sex committing themselves to each other in the form of marriage. Admittedly, I am Canadian, so I cannot comment as to how same-sex marriage could impact your constitutional rights, but up here, same-sex marriage is legal and it has in no way affected my rights, just my pocketbook when I go to the weddings ;):D

For. Marriage in this context is a government institution and therefore should be open to anyone and separated from religion. In states where there is gay marriage, nothing bad has happened (and why would it?) All arguments against gay marriage lack teeth. They are just based on moral superiority, and "marriage proponents" scaring people into thinking the benefits of marriage are a zero sum game, and the more people who get them, the less the heterosexual married people have to be "entitled" too.

That being said, I'm against government supported marriage benefits altogether. There are 1,100 references to marriage in the federal code. All of these, plus the benefits from employers and the cultural benefits of marriage only serve to discriminate against all unmarried people, whether they be gay, straight, part of a couple, or single. If the government got it's nose out of where it doesn't belong (personal relationships) and ended this discrimination, gay marriage wouldn't even have to be an issue. I believe that gay people need to be treated equally, but I also believe that single people and coupled people who don't want to get married also need to be treated equally, so gay marriage isn't the issue in my view.

Interesting!! I'm curious as to how this'll turn out...

I'm for it...I think you should be allowed to marry whomever you want, and have the same benefits as a "normal" marriage. Just because you are with someone of the same sex doesn't mean you're any less of a couple. I suppose it is against our constitutional rights--i don't know if it says anywhere that you have to be with someone of the opposite sex of your life is null and void!

I'll add more later when I have more energy but here a few thoughts on why.
    1. It is a civil right, the constitiuion states "all men are created equal" which means all humans should get equal rights, simple as that.

2.Also, the Constitution promises freedom of religion, which should mean freedom FROM religion, i say this because it seems many anti-gay marriage reasons are opposed to it because of the bible or christianity. I'm not saying all christians are anti-gay marriage btw as I know some aren't but alot of them are.

3.Fact is the divorce rate in the USA is already 50%, people worry that legalizing gay marriage will increase the divorce rate but its legal in denmark and their heterosexual divorce rate is higher then the homosexual divorce rate, so i don't think the divorce rate would shoot up.

    4. Obviously being gay is not a choice, so it isn't fair to not let gays marry because of something they can't change , you can't be free if your not allowed to marry the person you love because of something you can't change, its the same as not letting someone marry because of their race.

    5. It's important for people to be accepting of others differences. There have been many hate crimes against homosexuals, such as Matt Shepard, Larry King, and many others. If gay marriage isn't legal it makes it seem like its not okay, but children who learn from their parents and the media need to know that it is okay to be yourself.

K thats what i think on the subject.

Sure, I'm all right with it. I think that gays should have the same opportunity to get married. Then, when it falls apart, they can enjoy the court battles, alimony, child support if they adopted during their partnership, legal fees, and endless frustration that the rest of the divorced world has to deal with.
