Subaru Owners - I want your 2 cents!

Hey all,
Looking at Foresters....not really planning on buying at the moment, but when our 98 civic finally kicks the bucket, this is what we'd like to get. Would be perfect for our camping, outdoor adventures, and two dogs...

can anyone provide some kind of insight on whether to buy, or not to buy and why? If high mileage is more of a concern on a Subaru? I've never owned a Subaru, and never had one in the family...so I know nothing about their credibility until I do some research.

Thanks!

  • New Outback is bigger than it used to be.

    The Forrester is nice.

I have an 04 outback. Put 70k miles on it with no issues at all and the thing can climb walls & drives through snow and ice like it is on a race track.

    All subarus rock.

  • I own a 2001 Forester, bought it new off the lot. Unfortunately, the 2001 models have had multiple recalls on major parts, aka the engine and head gaskets... I have had the heads replaced twice on mine. The design of the car is extremely practical for an active person with dogs and even with all the recall issues, it still runs pretty good. I don't plan on buying another one in the future, but for the design and shape of this make, it's going to be hard to find something comparable for the price tag. Hope this helps! Good luck car shopping :)

P.S. My aunt is on her second Forester and I've never seen her in it without her Golden Retriever that's the size of a small bear- he loves it!

I had a WRX impreza from 2002-2006, and I LOVED that car. Never had any issues with the car. I bought it for $23K new, and sold it for $12,500 with 88,000 miles on it. Great resale apparently. And the All-wheel drive was nice -- really saved me from 2 close accidents.

I'm hoping to get another one in the wagon model one day.
    good luck!

  • I bought an 07 Forester last September. Best vehicle I've ever owned, superb drive, incredible on snow & ice, surprisingly rapid, you can rev it all the way, and very practical. Only drawbacks I could say are that it is fairly thirsty on fuel, so range is not great between re-fills.

Undoubted quality vehicle though, very safe.

Would you owners say that it'd be worth it to buy a Forester over 100k if the price, and rest of the car was up to par?? Keep in mind, this is just hypothetical.

I had a early 90's subaru and it seemed like the engine did not age well. My friend also had a newer STI and the turbo went out on it all the time.

A lot of people love their Subaru's, but I would try something else. I recommend a used Toyota 4-Runner. You'll get greater value out of it.

4-Runner is definitely our other choice...just haven't been able to find one that I really feel comfortable about.

My 04 outback is used. Came with almost 20k miles on it. Drove it to Maine / Indiana /Illinois.

My outback has never been stuck in anything - snow, mud, New Hampshire. I guarantee that a 4 runner wouldn't be able to keep up with it in the snow.

With regular maintenance the Subaru with 100k miles should be fine, just buy from dealer.
