  • The MSG shows.
    September 10&11

I think the whole "Breath" signs were amazing.

Night one they laughed at us then went back to the hotel and definitely rehearsed it cause on night two it was tight.

That whole string though was amazing starting with Continental and two nights at MSG.

    Killer sets - especially 9/11/98

So out of the 5 shows I think I hit in 98 - this one was by far the best.

I know - I have stated that before about this show.

  • & just to expand - Continental - McGwire broke the record.

Ed destroyed fake files from the Clinton investigation.

    Crowd went berzerk.

And the MSG shows were just all NYC. Good stuff.

those were good shows - the fake files thing was so off the wall, but they did funny shit that tour. Kevin's de-mulleting in Detroit, for instance... I remember Ed hitting a ping pong ball with his SG when McGwire broke the record.

Montreal was a top experience for me. Possibly the loudest arena crowd I've ever heard. The band were literally covering their ears and grinning at the encore. Hard To Imagine.

Seattle II was a ridiculous performance, as well. Both those shows on beautiful Seattle days, outdoors @ Memorial. Red Mosquito on the 335. I seem to recall Throw Your Arms in the preset, Ed on a black Rickenbacker.

the 2 boston shows were also very good 9 15 and 9 16 as were the philly shows... that tour was pretty consistent other than the fact that some of the shows were very short compared to your average pearl jam show now...

My two favorites from that tour:
7/2/98 St. Louis (every single song on that setlist has one of their best versions and great energy by the band met with the energy by the crowd)
7/22/98 Seattle. I just love it when Vedder's in a pissed off mood :P makes it a more interesting show.
I have no patience for bad music and stupid people...

  • Chicago and Dallas are pretty fucking stellar also, as are the Melbourne shows.

I have the Dallas DVD somewhere, where Dennis Rodman comes out, it's a crack-up.

Aug 29, 1998 I believe they also played on the 28th there as well. Both real good shows.

The 28th had a killer setlist and I can't remember if I was at it. 25 and mushrooms, it is what it is...

The 29th I remember quite clearly because I had been hit by a car just a few weeks earlier while working (highway construction) and it was only the 2nd time they played last kiss.

Ahh, memories; the ones that are left are all fun and games until Alzheimers makes them inappropriate.

    1. MSG 2 (9/11/98) Breath Show

    2. Boston 2 (9/16/98) Quarter Show

    Yep...

and I recommend this one only from the boot I have but the whole band / crowd is ON like a MF!

maybe the best live version of "Black" too...

    (really!)

06/30/98 - Target Center: Minneapolis, MN
Sometimes, Last Exit, Brain of J, Hail Hail, Faithfull, Even Flow, Corduroy, I Got Shit, Pilate, Daughter/(Noise of Carpet)/chanting, MFC, Lukin, Wishlist, Mankind, All Those Yesterdays, Black, Alive

  • This without a doubt is the easiest decision I've ever had to make on this board.

(Coming from a man who knows his bootlegs) 1998-03-05 Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia

It's probably one of the best quality bootlegs the band has ever released. You can't find a better sound.

set: Release, Brain of J, Animal, Faithfull, In My Tree, I Got Shit, Corduroy, Wishlist, Even Flow, Spin the Black Circle, Daughter/(Pebbles), Given to Fly, Hail Hail, MFC, (Crazy Mary!)/, Elderly Woman, Off He Goes, State of Love and Trust, Do the Evolution, Alive
enc 1: Go, Black, Rearviewmirror, Immortality
    enc 2: Indifference, Porch
notes: The show was broadcast on the radio throughout Australia, and on the internet in real time on JJJ. As is typically the case, the shows get better on second or third nights, and PJ’s third show in Melbourne is tremendous. Ed slips in a tribute to the late Michael Hutchence (of INXS) during ‘In My Tree’ (”I’m so high I hold just one breath, give it to INXS, just like my innocence”). Some guitar chords from Midnight Oil’s ‘Beds are Burning’ lead to a wonderful version of ‘Corduroy,’ which includes the little stop/start thing during the bridge towards the end. Ed’s wonderful baritone comes through on ‘Wishlist’ and the “Camaro” line is changed to “I wish I was the full moon shining off your bulldozer’s hood,” plus “I wish I was the sound, of 50 million hands upraised for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,” and “I wish I was lucky man … well I guess that I am … I wish I could share with my friends, oh how many things that I have.” ‘Even Flow’ again awesome, featuring really extended soloing from Mike; very prolific and a manic version of ‘StBC’ (dedicated to “… all those who work at Triple J and the guys who work at PBS”). The ‘Daughter’ outtro/improv (”poor little girl screaming traffic in her hair …”) is a Shudder to Think song titled ‘Pebbles.’ A couple of verses from ‘Crazy Mary’ lead to ‘Elderly Woman.’ ‘Porch’ leads off as the slower version (like Bridge ‘96), but later speeds into the more familiar, rocked out version.

Very good show for sure. I think it's a case of where people rave about it because of the quality of the bootleg. I think the show is a top 5-6 from the '98 tour, but I wouldn't call it far and away the best.

    However: best Immortality ever.

    Vancouver.

Eddie was in the crowd singing Alive. Brilliant. Van was quite early in Matt's tenure as well.
  • 9/28 Pittsburgh was my favorite show from that tour. Saw 3 altogether.

I got Shit, Not For You, Alive, Black and opened with Release.

agree with all who have said Melbourne III, 1998. FANTASTIC RECORDING. i also have that on tape :)

also agree with comment - best immortality ever - what a finish. there is a special feel in this show.

this bootleg is without doubt my favorite closing to any bootleg i have.

    GO - BLACK - RVM - IMMORTALITY - INDIFFERENCE - PORCH.

porch is also one of my fave versions - slow start better build up than the current way they do it, and a truly unique solo from mike. a shortish version but the energy is awesome.

other notes - Release gets a huge reaction from the crowd. Hail, Hail is dedicated to Luc Longley (all hail the lucky ones, the ones who are tall) Ed - "i dont know if you can see it, well i know u fuckers on radio cant see it so fuck you. but for the people in the building, these are luc longley shoes", Ed sails across the stage at encore 2 with an aussie flag around him like a cape - "thats how you make us feel"

This show also has my fave mid-first set trio of songs - FAITHFUL, IN MY TREE, I GOT SHIT. this bootleg made me fall in love those 3 songs.
