is Sonic Youth still an underground staple with the more commercial sounding albums they have been putting out in recent years? Such a huge contrast between Eternal and Rather Ripped compared to Evol and Bad Moon Rising. Does it hurt their reputation?

I don't think it hurts their reputation. The albums are not as good as the earlier ones though in my opinion. although i loved sonic nurse.

i dont think so at all. i personally like the eternal a lot and it was the album that actually got me into them so i would say no.

I don't think so - they're making the music they want and have never really looked for huge commercial success. They have more of an "underground" following I suppose, but they've been on a major label since '90. Look at the difference musically among Pearl Jam's albums...compare Ten with No Code - there really is no comparison. Sure, their sales went way down and most mainstream music listeners didn't get into it as much, but who cares? If you're going to stop listening to an artist because they made the kind of music they wanted to, well...that's just dumb. If you just plain didn't like it, I guess that's another story.

As far as Sonic Youth goes, I don't think there's anything they've put out that I disliked.

  • their newest album is the best thing they've done in 10+ years, IMO. Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, Rather Ripped- they're all good.
