Need help from a 'self-framer' please

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.

Usually I take my posters to the framer, but because the Philly posters are a standard 18x24 I thought I might try to do it myself.

Simple question:

If the poster is 18x24 and I get a matte, what is the appropriate size frame to get? I don't want to cover any of the images up.

Thanks
Larry

  • framesbymail.com has be recommended on here to me. I Used them and loved the finished product. This a note from them.

In order for your artwork to fit properly, measure it and then subtract 1/4 from both the horizontal and vertical dimensions (this will overlap 1/8. on each side). Input that dimension for the mat opening. This will guarantee that your artwork will not fall through the opening we cut in the mat.

*All frames have a lip of about 1/4 on all 4 sides that holds the artwork in.

*When you are adding matting, the frame size is automatically calculated by the website when you adjust the matting borders.

I'm a pro framer. ...in my frame shop now (and anytime I post).

    added my 2 pennies below...

In order for your artwork to fit properly, measure it and then subtract 1/4 from both the horizontal and vertical dimensions (this will overlap 1/8. on each side). Input that dimension for the mat opening. This will guarantee that your artwork will not fall through the opening we cut in the mat. WHAT I MAY RECOMMEND IS IF THE IMAGE IS PRINTED WITH A STRAIGHT-EDGE (WITHOUT A PART OF THE IMAGE EXTENDING PAST THE IMAGE BOARDER) THEN YOU MAY SIMPLY WANT TO MEASURE THE IMAGE ITSELF, THEN ADD A 1/4" TO SHOW THE WHITE PAPER EVEN ALL AROUND (ASSUMING THAT THERE IS AT LEAST 3/8" TO 1/4" OF WHITE ALL AROUND THE IMAGE). SOMETIMES (THOUGH NOT OFTEN WITH PJ POSTERS) AN IMAGE DOES NOT SIT SQUARELY ON THE PAPER, BUT IF YOU BASE YOUR MEASUREMENT ON THE IMAGE RATHER THAN THE PAPER EDGE, THAT WOULD COMPENSATE FOR THAT. SOME IMAGES LIKE THE EV ROCKET POSTER HAVE PRINTING ALMOST TO THE EDGE OF THE PAPER... AND I'D CERTAINLY LEAVE SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO A PRO.

*All frames have a lip of about 1/4 on all 4 sides that holds the artwork in. IT VARIES, BUT WHEN FRAMES ARE CUT, TYPICALLY THEY ARE CUT WITH A 1/8" ALLOWANCE, SO A 16X20 FRAME IS ACTUALLY 16 1/8 X 20 1/8, AND WHATEVER THE LEDGE (RABBET) IS, THE FRAME WILL COVER 1/16" LESS ALL AROUND BECAUSE OF THIS. 1/4" IS NOT A BAD RULE OF THUMB THOUGH.

...and if you go to a framer, I'd recommend an independent shop, and feel free to let them know if you have a budget. A lot of frame "sales" are gimmick prices that are regular price for an independent shop, or could be close to matched at a indie shop. ...and I've seen some horrible things in person being done to artwork at big box stores (though if you're not worried about ever taking the artwork out of the frame, nor the value of the artwork, I would worry less about a big box).
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

I am going to try to use that framesbymail site to frame this print http://www.expressobeans.com/public/detail.php/64327 . the poster is 12.5 X 32 . So what size frame/matte should I be ordering?? If someone could walk me thru this I would greatly appreciate it !! I dont want to screw this up, or use the wrong materials that would damage the print in case. god forbid, I ever needed the money and had to sell it. Thanks!
