I love all the time I get to spend with my daughter, but need a new direction regarding a career. Anybody have any ideas. I am certified in Elementary Educ.(runs out in June 2010), worked for family business doing structural steel detailing, and have some experience doing carpentry, landscaping etc... Just curious for other people's opinions. Start my own business?

Can't you get another job in elementary education?

We need good teachers- can you get certified and continue? Nice schedule with kids(?)
starting a small business right now would be incredibly "ify"- we own one -its been a roller coaster these 17 years with the economy. If you have another option take it.
My best friend just got a job after being unemployed all year. We are celebrating here! she was about at her wits end. She was planning on going to school- short class- for nurse asst.- I think the gov is offering some career changing education plans you could look into.
    Good luck
  • Thanks for the responses so far. Teaching jobs in PA seem to be hard to obtain with so many applicants and the hiring is mostly in the summer. It's frustrating to me because that is what I've always wanted to do, but can't seem to get my foot in the door. (came close, but it didn't happen) I guess right now I'm leaning towards taking the courses to keep the teaching cert. active and start substitute teaching AGAIN. If this doesn't pan out, I've been considering IT career. My neighbor actually had me drop off my resume for a nice job in the IT related field. The only problem is that the drive was like 1 1/2 hours ONE WAY! Needless to say it didn't pay enough to justify the drive. And the logistics of dropping the kid off in the morning was near impossible. Thanks for responding! Tough times out there for many I know! At least I'm saving some money by not smoking anymore!

I've been taking classes for IT/Network Administration. I'm currently cramming for my A+ exam and I'm trying to get back to school full time next semester for an A+ certification training course. Hopefully by next May I'll have 3 or 4 certifications. People who fix computers are in demand because many, many people are afraid of computers so when they break someone needs to fix them.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

We were so happy now my friend gets a call this am saying they over hired the position so no job for her- back to square one- she's really going crazy with this. It is so hard on people- she's using her savings to pay for health insurance and supplement UC. And its going fast
  • It is very stressful. My dad had me in for two weeks for a small job and now I'm back home. Until jobs start to become available, our government is going to have to continuously offer extensions for unemployment benefits. Otherwise, there are going to be millions of people losing their homes. I put on my strong, confident, happy face, but inside I am very stressed, depressed, concerned, and unsure what the future holds. Sorry to hear about your friend. So many Pearl Jam songs help me through these tough times.
