Pearl Jam and The Cure. What would you do?

I guess I know what the PJ board would say, but here's what happened. I had tickets to see The Cure last September in NYC. The show got postponed to June 20th. I still have the option to send the tickets back for a refund if I want because the show date was changed. I'm seeing The Cure in Montreal in May. They are not my favorite band but I do like them a lot, and I have seen them 1 other time. The possible 2nd Camden show may happen on June 20th. I've seen Pearl Jam loads of times (25 I think) and will see them at the very least 3x on this tour. I am totally 50-50 on this. Do I go to the 2nd Camden show, or just leave it be and go see The Cure? I feel like I'm going to have regret either way! If I see The Cure, the 2nd Camden show will turn out to be the best of the tour. If I see PJ, I will have a good time but be sorry I missed The Cure. I feel its good to see more bands (as much as I *love* PJ) and not limit my horizons, but the thought of not being at a PJ show that I could be at is also tough! So what would you do?

Let me be a sole voice on contrarian thought here ...

I was lucky enough to see them last year, as Mountain View was the ONLY US tour date they did not cancel last year.

They were freakin' awesome. Better than when I saw them at Coachella a few years back.

Their second encore was 7 straight songs from Boys Don't Cry, for those that don't know, that's the early release that included:

    Boys Don't Cry
    10:15 on a Saturday Night
    Killing an Arab
    Fire In Cairo
    Jumping Someone Else's Train

Just imagine a 7 song 2nd encore with Release, Deep, Oceans, Garden, Once and Porch!

They sounded great and Robert Smith, while carrying an extra 25-50 pounds these days (lbs, not £), he still sounds fantastic!

It was a three hour set, and their new material was really good, fit right in with their old stuff.

    I'd say it's a coin flip ..... seriously.

Besides, there is no way the 2nd Camden show will be the best of the tour .... they'll save that for closing night at Mansfield! :D

Honestly, if you already will be seeing PJ 3x on this tour, is a 4th really necessary?

Granted, I love PJ as much as the next guy, but there is something in economics called the law of diminishing returns. It states that the more one gets of something, the less satisfying it becomes. It is true of most things -- food, sex, money, etc. -- and I would argue that it is true of PJ, too.

That being said, the fact that PJ changes their setlist so much slightly changes that rule, because in that case you won't be getting exactly the same thing each time (a $20 bill is always a $20 bill, but a PJ setlist is not ever the same exact thing).

However...what are the odds that PJ saves their best show of the tour for fucking Camden 2? I'd bet on MSG or Mansfield any day over Camden.

On the other hand, if you're already seeing The Cure once in May, and they don't change their setlist all that much...then the law of diminishing returns applies to them, too. In that case, maybe you should just take the PJ show since you know it's going to be different than the other 3 you attend.

I've probably just made your decision tougher for you. Sorry! If it makes you feel any better, I have tickets to see a postponed Cure show as well...happily, however, it does conflict with anything else that night. :)

note, I didn't include Black, Even Flow, Jeremy or Alvie .... but I understand your point ... PJ still busts these songs out ...

For the Cure, those songs off Boys Don't cry were relased in 1980.

couldnt agree more....even the people who didnt get tickets would complain that 10 club didnt give them tickets so that they could witness this travesty first hand.

Been reading your recent posts.....I'm impressed.

Do the Cure mix up setlists... or would the Canada show mirror the setlist for your makeup date?

I have seen the Cure twice (Disintegration Tour and Wish Tour).. both were amazing shows, but if the setlist will be the same, wouldn't matter which show you caught...

I wish had the choice of PJ or the Cure, but I'm taking the Cure because they're actually playing my city.

And they're an arena rock band who only charged me $45.00.

    :)

    Just sayin is all.

I saw the Cure at Randalls Island... They were great and we were right on the railing... very very good show...

Would I rather see PJ 5 times than see the Cure once?

    You bet.

Then again, I'm only a casual fan of The Cure and a diehard PJ fan.

Are you sure that we can still send the tickets back for a refund? I have an email from Ticketmaster that says the deadline for doing that was in December.
I have two tickets as a friend from overseas and I were going to go to the show together.
I've never seen The Cure and it's my only chance to see them on this tour. I haven't decided yet what to do.

its actually pretty funny how you can post two sentences and immediately enrage a few dozen people. I've mastered this on the stones boards and am glad to see someone doing it here....provides entertainment IMO.

The Cure doesnt tour nearly as often as PJ, go see THE CURE!

I can't wait for the Fairfax show!
The less you know, the more you believe.
  • I've recently seen The Cure, and I'd totally go to see Pearl Jam if I had to make that decision. The Cure played for three hours straight and all. on one hand, it was awesome to see them live. but I don't think I'd go to see them again. three hours can be very long :o a gal I know got the setlist that night. I think they do mix up their sets but nowhere as much as PJ do. and, at least in Europe, they mostly played 2 or 3 encores off of that setlist.
I feel like I'm going to have regret either way!
yep! except one band sucks when you see them, so you are glad you are going to see the other one... :D

exactly, you can go here: http://www.cure-concerts.de/main/2008.php to check set lists but you'll see its not nearly as diverse as PJ so you are alright if you are seeing them once

I appreciate all your responses! And I appreciate that you understand it is a hard decision! One reason I *might* lean toward The Cure is I'm taking my older daughter on that trip. She's never seen PJ (or The Cure). (She's 18, and in the past did not like long drives and did not have interest in seeing live bands though she likes music and she wants to go this time) Normally my younger daughter (13) is my show buddy, and we have the road/show trip experience down to a science, but there are some school things that she really can't miss, so the older one wants to go. If we go with The Cure the second night, my older daughter gets to experience 2 bands, but hanging out in Philly between 2 PJ shows is cool too...

To answer Yefa's question, I double-checked with ticketmaster and they said as long as I got the tickets back to them by June 13th, I could do it. Maybe the deadline is different for different postponed shows.

I guess I'll have to think about it a little more...at least I have the weekend!

edit: MrStyles420, thanks for that link - I'll check it out.

2nd edit: I think I may have the answer - The Cure are at Radio City in NY the next night (6/21) and I saw some tickets available for not too bad a price. I could get the refund for the MSG show, hopefully get Camden II tickets for 6/20, then go to The Cure at Radio City on 6/21! (I'd forgotten about Radio City - I missed the pre-sale for that one). This all assumes Camden II is going to happen, and I have some time so if Camden II happens and I get tix, that's what I'm going to do. Its been a loong hard-working winter.
