Protesting hasn't done a thing to stop the war(s) and no one will protest the condition of the economy. People with lives actually go out and find another job instead of protesting.
People can blame the government ...
People can blame the economy.......
People can blame others....
People can come up with 1,000 excuses......
But most people just need to take a good look in the mirror to find out why their lives are fucked up.......
Oh, so we should shut the fuck up and pretend that we have no say what's going on in the world? Silence is the enemy, and the day we all just keep to ourselves and focus on "moi" is the day we give up on everything we've fought so hard to get where we currently are, not to mention take for granted.
the fattest part is true. the laziest is only half true. there is a lot of entitlement, but we're also incredibly overworked in america. we have the worst work-life balance in the western world. americans define themselves by their job/career to an unhealthy extent. plus our cost of living has become so high, a household needs 2 incomes just to pay bills.
that is because america is also the most consumer-based society out there - everybody believes they need to have things they really don't ... also, the life cycle of everything is ridiculously small that people are replacing things that should last a long time every few years ...
planned obsolescence... god bless the auto industry. make it cheaper to buy new than repair something. you double your profits and wipe out the backbone of the economy... middle class skilled workers.
Yeah, when was the last time you saw a TV repair store or a shoe repair store? People just throw them out and buy a new one.
And even if you do fix something, with all of the internet resources out there, you can do it yourself. My father-in-law's newer rear projection TV kept burning out light bulbs... after changing a couple, he found some internet message boards and websites that walked him through things to check and replace, and with a couple parts he ordered, he fixed it himself.
There was this old luggage repair store that I passed everyday... I always thought to myself "how many people would even fix a suitcase these days?" Sure enough, about 2 months ago, the store closed. Unless you have a nice expensive luggage set, why pay $30 for a new zipper or wheel, when you can go to kmart and buy a new 4 piece set for $50? And really, what is the point of having expensive luggage, when it just gets beat to shit by the airlines anyway?
My whole life

What is it that you have fought so hard to get, that you are afraid of losing?
And I dont remember saying that people should shut the fuck up.

We didn't get this far (civil rights movement, the suffragettes for women's voting rights, etc that commy already mentioned) by keeping our mouths shut and "obeying" our gov't. You didn't come out and blatantly say we should shut the fuck up, but your statement pretty much sums that up. And look at ourselves? I think we're already quite narcissistic as a nation already as it is...

I think we're labeled the laziest because after being overworked, we become vegetables and are only capable of sitting in front of our TVs watching American Idol. No energy left. It happened to me, until I took control of the situation and left the company overworking me. I'm much healthier now.
We're a time-sick country, as not only our work/life balance out of whack, but also, no rules in regarding worker time off, vacation, sick time or maternity leave. Also, there's typically no laws as to how long your company can make you work per shift. The airline industry just now put into effect that pilots cannot work 18+ hr. shifts anymore. Makes you feel safe now knowing that your pilot isn't exhausted from being overworked, now huh? I know, I'm rambling and off topic.

Exactly...
YOU took a look in the mirror....
You took control of your situation...
You did what YOU thought was best for you......
And most companies follow the 8 hour work day/40 hour work week....right???
Its been that way for quite some time....right??
Dont most companies have a policy of one weeks vacation after your first year of employment?
Isnt maternity leave taken care of by the FMLA???
Or am I missing something???

More and more companies, esp. now during a recession will work their existing workers harder so they don't have to hire more help, that's common right now. I worked for a challenging publishing co. that wanted their employees to work no less than 110%, not giving holidays off (having to use vacation time to take them off, because "someone may want to work rather than take time off") and offering only salaries so that people were working longer and harder (and faster) only to get the same pay. MANY companies do this. Work the Hell out of their people without added pay.
8 hr/40 hr week? I'd love to work a job like that. I've never been able to get a job that looks out for the employee's health and family balance and only require that employees work 40 hrs per week. That's so yesterday. It's up to each individual company as to how much time they give employees off. The national law for maternity leave is 6 weeks off. Pfft. Simply not enough time. Some companies offer more, (larger companies) and FMLA is voluntary leave, no pay. Not everyone can afford that.

After leaving the publishing company...

Back in printing. Both industries are a dying breed, however...
Most protesters are college aged kids thats barely make it to the voting booth to vote for the President, and just do it because its the in thing to do. Most barely have any concept of what they are protesting about, and usually aren't looked at with any kind of respect by the rest of the voting population that works and has actual life experience.
i'm so tired of this bullshit statement. i hold the same beliefs now i held when i was in high school, college, working world, grad school, and now career. if you are so fucking convinced that any opinion held by someone aged 18-22 is completely invalid and worthless becos they don't have "actual life experience", why let them vote at all? i know people in their 50s who've never had a real life experience, you don't try to say they don't deserve to be heard.
Protesting attracts the wrong kind of attention, and no one actually respects it. Get educated on the issues and go vote, thats the strongest statment one can make, and thats what politicians pay attention to.
what, people are gonna riot because they have to settle for holding onto their current overpriced iGadget another year instead of buying this year's newest model? please.
things are bad for many in America, but not most. most are just inconvenienced slightly, including me. we're spoiled.

i looked very hard... but where did i talk about protesting in my post? this is kind of a recurring problem you and i seem to have. you keep nailing me on all these points i never made. it's incredibly effective. now if only you could translate those skills to actually addressing something i DID say... then you'd truly be a formidable debate opponent!

You seem to have great faith in politicians. If they were genuinely public servants I'd go along with what you say. Too many are only in it to feather their own nests and the public know it. They support policies that will get them a vote and then fail to deliver.
In the UK we have a huge proportion of our MPs about to be forced to pay back unwarranted expenses claims. These include claiming mortgage interest on 2nd homes where the mortgage has already been paid off, maintenance of bird houses at their magnificent homes etc, etc, etc. We have yet to see a single MP arrested and charged with fraud. They are interviewed and come out with the most ridiculous excuses. If you or I tried this we'd be laughed at in court and then locked away.
Many of these crooks have said they won't stand again but we then hear if they don't resign but stay until the next election they'll receive huge payouts. All this thieving comes from the publics taxes. I won't trust one of these fuckers ever again.

Just look at the money that's spent every week at the Box Office and know that the economy is no where near as bad as it could be.
...are those who've helped us.
Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
if we all aren't already locked up in Fema camps
did I say that out loud???
random, but speaking of TV versus action:
"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace."
- John Lennon
.... just reiterating how we've lost our sense of what's important.
Take people's TVs away...now that would incite a riot!
