The Spectrum - the first show ever

I wasn't sure where to post this... but I settled for the Live forum.

I was reading something Bob (who's_pearljam) had posted a few days back, in which he commented that he had seen the first show ever in the Spectrum, which was the Quaker City Jazz festival in 1967 in which Flip Wilson was the main attraction - and also the last, with Pearl Jam. (and those amazing shows which I was not lucky enough to witness)

Which got me thinking, there are probably not too many that have experienced both the very beginning and the end of the Spectrum. Since there are many years in between, different generations in music. And to have seen both, seems like quite an admirable thing, or remarkable at least.

So, the question is, has anyone here attended the first show in the Spectrum, or knows of someone who did, an aunt, uncle, mom, etc... I thought it would be interesting to find out. Or maybe this is just me being nostalgic... it was worth asking, either way.

So .... if anyone was there for the first show, or knows someone who was, please come forward, and tell us all about it!
:)

  • Doubt you'll find anyone here who was at the Spectrum's first show, but I can tell you that my personal first rock show was there. Paul McCartney and Wings, 5/12 or 5/14, 1976. I can still picture the pyrotechnics for Live and Let Die!

Yes, I don't have much hopes of finding anyone here that attended the first show (except Bob, who was in the previous version of this forum) - but maybe someone knows someone who did.

It is pretty cool that the first rock show you attended was at The Spectrum, that alone must make that place special for you. 8-)

My mom's first concert was the Doors at the Spectrum in 1970...she still has the ticket stub! My first event there was likely a Flyers game, but my husband and I attended our first concert together there in 1988 - David Lee Roth. My first concert ever was also in '88 - Pink Floyd at JFK Stadium, and I attended the last concert there (tho I hear there was another event after it) - The Grateful Dead in 1989.

Congrats to your mom for keeping that ticket stub.
I keep mine also, but I am much too disorganized, so I have them in different boxes, and drawers and nooks, so that I don't even know what I have, and what I have lost...

Would have loved to see Pink Floyd.

My first Spectrum show was the 11/25/69 Stones show. I still have the ticket stub, lost as a book mark somewhere, but i believe my ticket cost a whopping , to a 10 year old with a small allowance it was anyway, $5.50 . I inadvertently told a friend it was a Who show. I did see The Who, Pink Floyd , and The Troggs , but that was 07/24/68 at JFK Stadium. I did see The Who in 70, 71, 73, and 75 at The Spectrum. Sad that , of all three stadiums I grew up with , all will be gone once The Spectrum comes down. I guess that is progress ?

  • My friend's husband went to what he says was the first ever rock concert at the Spectrum ... Janis Joplin and Vanilla Fudge were the two groups he mentioned that played that night!

There was a guy who posted here earlier that said he went to one of the Philly shows with his mom who had seen Elvis perform there.
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!

My first time at the Spectrum I'm pretty sure was a WWF (WWE) event in '86 seeing Hulk Hogan against Paul Orndorff in a steel cage  Next one was Hogan vs Kamaal and I remember Kamala's entrance music being real loud.

First sporting event was a Sixers game against Indiana. One thing I definately rememebr from that was seeing a rat on the stairs by our seats.

First concert there I think was Korn or STP in the late 90's
