Um, okay. I think this is a pretty funny thread, and what I am about to write I post with trepidation, as I imagine some of you will see my response as humorless. As the mother of a young man with Tourette Syndrome, I feel obligated to interrupt this thread to make the following public service announcement:
Coprolalia, or the repetition of obscene words, actually is extremely rare in individuals with Tourette's. Fewer than ten percent of people with TS experience coprolalia. Tourette Syndrome encompasses a wide variety of simple and complex motor and vocal tics. In my son's case, his motor tics have become extremely severe, painful, debilitating and dangerous. The popular misconception of TS as a "potty mouth" disorder is amusing to many people, but I can tell you there is nothing the least bit funny about watching my son struggle to breathe or scream in pain as his arms try to dislocate themselves for the hundredth time that day.
If anyone would like to learn more about TS, the wikipedia page is excellent. You also can check out http://www.tsa-usa.org.
Ledbetterman10, I am not offended by your post, and I hope you will understand why I felt compelled to correct your misconception (which I am sure was meant in jest, and not in a mean-spirited way).

I'm actually aware of everything you said here. And as someone whose child sufferers from TS, I could understand your frustration about generalizing Coprolalia with other forms of TS. But no one would know what I meant if I said "Coprolalia" so I just said Tourette's because ...as you noted....people erroneously think that it only means you shout out profanities.

Not really. Don't you remember the scene where Kyle goes to therapy with the kids who have Tourette's and he sees that most of them don't shout profanities but have other tics instead?

Actually, that episode of "South Park" is very well done. It contains a great deal of good and accurate information for attentive viewers (watch the group therapy scene, listen to what the kids say, look at the posters in the background -- all spot-on stuff). I was worried about that episode before it aired, but I was pretty pleased with the result. Those guys will use any excuse to push the language envelope.
The misconception predates "South Park," by a long way. I'm just trying to fight it, one incident at a time. My kid has enough challenges without having other people try to hide their children from "that crazy boy with the cursing disease."

I am acutely aware of these things as I was making "clean" versions of songs for my kids when they were first getting into PJ. Whenever one of these songs would come on, they'd ask me if it was the clean version or not and cue me when to turn the volume down on the radio! Once they started getting into the bootlegs though the whole thing became hopeless.
When Ed told my 12 year old son on Friday that he would've been "fucked" to be sitting in other seats, I was completely unfazed and delighted that he was talking to him at all - he could have said whatever he wanted and it would have been just fine with me!
