  • There is a great documentary called American Movie about a guy from Wisconsin trying to get his indie film finished and released on video. His friends and family are a riot.

Burn After Reading is fantastic. Also, if you're so inclined, Super High Me is very funny. Just saw both of those recently and loved them.

    Indy 2010, Indy 2003, Champaign 2003, Cincy 2000, Indy 2000
    Indy 1998, West Lafayette 1994, Chicago-Lollapalooza 1992
    Cincy-Lollapalooza 1992

    Yes.
  • In Bruges.

It's dark but hilarious (very English humour) and well shot. The story, cast and setting are all glorious and it's definately in my Top 10 of all time.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

you've got to watch In Bruges as Sian said... it really is a brilliant movie.

Burn After Reading i loved as well.

The Damned United was very good... its very british, but its good.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I watched Paul Blart: Mall Cop on Netflix last night . . . and enjoyed it. I was expected to watch it for it's unintentional comedy but the movie was actually pretty decent for what it aimed for (PG rating; family friendly).

For a more serious movie, I enjoyed The Watchmen the other day. Just make sure you carve out a good chunk of time because it run well over 3 hours.

  • Really enjoyed 'Drag me to Hell'. It's a good, fun horror flick. It's a Sam Raimi movie. So if you're a fan of the Evil Dead series, you'd enjoy it.

Hah, I just watched this. His guitar playing friend is amazing.

    Excellent Film.
  • City of God.

    Superb film.

    Watched recently 'waltz with bashir'
In 1982, Ari Folman was a 19-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find that he does not remember a thing from that period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the reality of which he is unable to tell. In his memory, he and his soldier friends are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut under the light of flares descending over the city.

Folman rushes off to meet another friend from his army service, who advises him to discuss it with other people who were in Beirut at the same time in order to understand what happened there and to relive his own memory. Folman converses with friends, a psychologist and the reporter Ron Ben-Yishai who was in Beirut at the time.

The film ends with animation transitioning to actual footage of the aftermath of the Sabra and Shatila massacre.

I've seen this one. And City of God.

I haven't seen too many films this year. I thought 'Milk' was good. And 'The Reader' was good.

    Also, 'Mesrine' was pretty good.

hm.. some of the newer ones I've seen.. (bear in mind that these are recently released ON DVD and IN FINLAND, so they're not the freshest of the fresh. )

Revolutionary Road was very good. Australia and Benjamin Button both excellent. if you don't mind watching films meant for slightly younger folk, I heartily recommend Coraline. :D Slumdog Millionaire, of course.

all in all good films I can think of.. The Pursuit Of Happyness, so so good, very moving. Alpha Dog is good, very good performances from the young(er) cast. 12 Monkeys (though I have a feeling you've seen that one :D ).. annnndd.. well, Crash.

EDIT: and since I threw Coraline in there, if you feel like watching a romantic comedy thingie, He's Just Not That Into You pleasantly surprised me. I especially thought the tension/emotions between Scarlett Johansson and Bradley Coopers characters were very realistic.

I'm glad you agree. I thoroughly enjoyed the film. At first, I just didn't get it...but towards the end the overall message clicked..

    I also recommend Revolutionary Road.

Apart from all the Oscar nominated films, Slumdog, Benjy Button, The Changeling etc films I've enjoyed this year were, Rendition, The Soloist and The Time Traveller's Wife.

For slightly older films you can't go wrong with Big Fish.
  • Here's a clip from the American Movie documentary. Mark the director is trying to get a soundbite from his uncle.

Also, just finished wathching it, enjoyed The Brothers Bloom tremendously. Couldn't guess the ending after the first five minutes of the film and that's always a plus.

Just watched this. I found it pretty depressing watching these rednecks doing their thing. I thought the end was quite touching though, when you learn about the old guy dying and leaving the director $50,000.
