Can someone explain/convince why I should like this song. It's slow, puts me to sleep and just is an overall dud. The best part is the bridge (Saving up a sunny day, something maybe two-toned...etc). Make me a fan.

  • some people "just don't get it"...it's ok man.
  • i find that the more interesting mike's solo is, the better the song is.

you should check out the live version on benaroya. it's killer.

i'm with you. i think it brings the show to a halt for me.
  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

someone here said it was a "fucking dirge" and that sounds pretty close to my opinion of it. yet i like Sleight of Hand, which sounds similar, only better.
plus i still have no idea what its about.

i do agree Mike can elevate the song a little with a good solo.

Because the bridge that you mentioned, when played really fucking loud, is the single greatest piece of music on that album!

  • No one "has" to like every song.

This one is nothing special to me either...but I don't mind it. I do appreciate it more because of the other shite on the radio when it came out. Wasn't Papa Roach and Simple Plan around at that time?

I love that comparison. This song has actually always reminded me of Pink Floyd. More in terms of structure than anything else. There's so much open space in this song, so much room for Mike to really make the guitar do its magic. The use of vacant space, the slower pace, reminds me of some Floyd stuff.

Anyway, I love Nothing As It Seems. It's really a haunting song, and one that I find completely beautiful. As other people have mentioned, the bridge is brilliant. The way the music builds at that part, almost as if it's trying to be uplifting. That part really sounds like it wants to break away from the darker feel before it, yet it can't. That tension, to me, is something special. I definitely think it is one of their least accessible songs, so I can see why some people don't like it. At the same time, I love how unique it is. Not to mention that fact that I love the guitar tone Mike has with the always-awesome Fender Blender.

  • OMG, I'm not going to try to convince anyone of anything.

    As for me...

I've loved this song from the first time I heard it. Yes, it's hard to swallow, and once you do, takes about 3 days and two boxes of Fiber One® to pass... but Mike's soloing and general playing on this... the groan and howl of his guitar... oh my god it's a masterpiece.

Mike is a genius, sure, but I don't get into his meedly-meedly-meedly Red Bull® solos on Even Flow and the like so much... but the drawn out, haunting, almost anguished-sounding solos on songs like Nothing As It Seems and Black at shows... it puts me in a special, dark but beautiful place.

    And that Nuremberg vid... <3!

I think it's a truly beautiful song, and the Nuremburg vid is superb. :D

    I absolutely agree

Mike's guitar here is like burst of lightning in a darkish night

Listen to it at loud volume, close your eyes and you will find yourself in another world

    I love it...
    This is how I feel....
