I dont think now is the time to be buying stocks what with the current Depression, and plus I really dont have any money to use on this kind of stuff, but in general, just for my own personal amusement, how much does it cost to get an account so you can start trading and investing in stocks? E trade seems to be the place to do it these days, how much do i need to pay up front to be able to start buying stocks tonight?

Oddly enough, I used to want to be a capitalist as a youngster, which is rather ironic to anyone who is vaguely familiar with my politics. My grandparents as a christmas gift in 1999 gave me 1 share of Microsoft, which was pretty cool. It ended up splitting, and now is 4 shares. I dont have enough of a safety net to be able to be buying 100 shares of a stock and not have a heart attack every day!

I havent followed the stock day to day in years, but when I did, it was fun, tracking it, seeing how much it went up or down etc...

Rather put a gun to my head with a bullet in it .. safer that way !
  • etrade sounds like a good idea, but in fact it is not, it requires a lot of trading to keep commission fees down. there are many other sites that keep your commissions low. just research and find the one that will fit your market action. and you are right, right now the market is not stable in a rising state. June was the best time this year to do any action. But it is kinda fun to watch your money grow large amounts in minutes. A lot more satisfying than working.

Actually, this is the time to put money in the market because you're buying cheap. If you wait until things have taken off, then you're going to buy high.....and then likely sell low at some point in the future when things aren't going well again.

I don't have stocks, but I do invest in mutual funds with a long term goal.

I find an aggressive mutual fund with a long track record and I buy that and leave it long term. My money is down something like 15-20% over the last couple of years, but I know it will come back.

  • i used to... but then I got married and had a son. Now I don't answer calls from 800 numbers.

I made a decent amount of money with Texas Instruments, CNH and John Deere from 03 to 06. Enough to put down 10% on a house. Got completely out in 06 which seems like a million years ago... was making 2X as much as a household back then with less expenses.
