the tour dates, do you feel like you were jipped?

Okay I am not complaining about either Chicago show as they both were awesome shows as I was at those, but do those of you who were at:

2009-08-28 Outside Lands Festival
2009-08-23/24 Chicago
2009-08-21 Toronto, Ontario
2009-08-18 London, UK
2009-08-17 Manchester, England
2009-08-15 Berlin, Germany
2009-08-13 Rotterdam, Netherlands
2009-08-11 London, UK
2009-08-08 Calgary, Alberta, CA

do you feel that you were given a little less than the Seattle shows and on since Backspacer was not released yet and got maybe 2 or 3 backspacer songs, versus the sets the last month have had? Not an effort question either they played amazing

Now I do think the band played great sets at all the above shows, and yes they threw in Brother there unlike the newer shows so far. But planning the first leg before they release the album seems rather silly. Does it mean they are coming back around for a later leg?

I know seeing all the new stuff and all the stuff with string arrangements the last month really makes me wish we'd have got some more of the new stuff on the early shows.

again not a complaint, more so a why did they schedule it like they did?

what do you think?

I personally was thrilled to get 2 nights of PJ at UC, just wishfully thinking would have been thrilled for more new stuff. I know they don't tour as much, and heck some states/countries have not gotten any PJ for years, but was their planning kind of dumb?

i'm just happy they came to Austin and that we were able to go. it had been 5 years since my last show & my wife had never seen them live. they could have played Even Flow non-stop for 2 hours and we would've been happy.
    I LOVE MUSIC.

  • I would have loved to have heard some more Backspacer at Chicago now, but at the time, I didnt want to hear too much. It sucks hearing songs youve never heard before and I didnt want the album to be ruined by hearing new songs too early. I think they did it just right with Got Some, Fixer, and Supersonic in Chicago.
  • absolutely don't feel jipped because common sense told me i wouldnt be hearing a lot of backspacer at toronto because the album wasn't released yet. i also hadn't heard the album yet and was looking forward to hearing mostly classics and things released from the past umpteen years that i hadnt heard yet at the first few shows i've been to.

toronto was awesome, my girl had never seen pj and she had an absolute blast. she was also in awe over how close we were to the stage. Row F, which ended up being more of a second row stage right seat, right in front of mike. once again the 10C provides me with an amazing seat. i never want to see pj unless i have 10C seats.

so in the end, if you wanted to go to a concert with a lot of backspacer, you'd go to one that was after sept 20. just common sense.

  • I was at Manchester and don't feel jipped as such, just more like the post-Seattle audiences have had a completely different tour to the one we got.

I'm not pissed at that, I loved seeing them and I'm just bloody glad that they did some European dates as too many bands don't bother, or if they do grace us with a visit it'd just be for a Festival.
Pearl Jam gave us proper tour dates and I love them for that.

I'm counting on the fact that PJ will be doing a full scale Backspacer tour to all the places they haven't made it yet, and maybe even going back to some for a return visit. There's too many obvious places that have been missed out from this leg of the tour, especially in the US, to think that they won't be doing that.

...ask the same question again in a couple of years, as this is one that I'd really need the benefit of hindsight to be able to answer!!

  • I didn't go to those shows, but I don't think so at all. Everyone knew that the dates fell before the album release so to expect the new songs to be played was a bit of a stretch going in.

Also, I hate to be PC... but can we stop using the term "jipped"? I know people use it without any intentional malice but it is quite an offensive term especially considering the Romas are still battling a ton of difficulties.

I don't feel that way at all. The 2 London shows were awesome - I honestly think that The O2 may be one of the best nights they've played. I don't mean best setlist, I mean the actual performance, they were on absolute top form.

We got Immortality, I Got Shit, Rats with the Ben intro, an amazing Black, Mike & boom trading riffs on Crazy Mary, the 1st ever playing of Supersonic....

Man, Chicago night 1 was one of the best concerts I have EVER seen, and I've probably been to something like 1000 shows in my time. I've seen PJ many times, dating back to 1992 and Chicago 1 was the best I've ever seen them. Chicago 2 was good, but the crowd wasn't as into it IMO. Not sorry in the slightest. I'm STILL walking on air from that show.

Long Road, Man of the Hour, Sad, Needle and the Damage Done, Rats, Come Back, In Hiding, Smile, two Who covers (which really demonstrates that they were playing what they wanted to play and not just churning it out).

What's not to love? This show was amazing and every time I hear the boot, I'm transported right back to that majestic night. I was in the upper level and it was like being front row. No regrets whatsoever. In fact, if you missed Chicago 1, you missed one of the best nights of the tour.

Amen. I agree completely. Man that 6 year break from a Texas show was really tough, but totally worth it. It was really cool to finally see PJ collaberate with Ben and Perry; Actually being there to witness it. Seems like this show is getting alot of love on this board too.

I really hope they play in Texas again in the next year or two. I'm hoping for 2 Texas shows at least next time. I'd love to see them in Big D again.

I'm more than happy because i had the chance to see them 2 nights in a row, i can't ask them to play a set of my favorite 100 songs just to say that they played "all the songs i wanted"... but the did play THE song i wanted to hear 8-) and well not hearing every single song give me an excuse to see them 1000 times in the future!

I don't feel jipped. The Toronto experience, top to bottom (from the pre-party to the pre-set to the show itself) was amazing. So glad I made the trip.

    so consensus is no

I agree don;t feel jipped to use that word again ;) I knew we would have an amazing show with or without backspacer, just wondering what the feel was.

here's to hoping Alpine Valley rears it's head this spring or summer.

I would have loved some more new stuff, but any Pearl Jam is good Pearl Jam

    No, not at all.
I went to Toronto and was just happy to see the band live again.
I will catch more of Backspacer on the next tour.As most people know,if PJ is in your area,
try as hard as you can not to miss it.

WOW! As a student of language, I'm surprised I didn't know this one, but instantly thought, no it's "gyped..." And then, OH! Now I get it... Hey thanks for calling attention to that! Knowledge is a good thing.... (Now can you tell me where "the whole nine yards" comes from? That's an interesting one!)

As for the Tour Dates -- Yes/No.

NO I don't feel ripped off by Outside Lands -- I got more than I expected from this Festival pre-release concert. Hell, it was just damn impressive! One of my favorite blocks of songs ever: Lowlight/Fixer/In My Tree! The Neil songs and Love Reign were phenomenal ... not to mention all the great music I got to see (BUILT TO SPILL) prior to PJ. And the Amsterdam atmosphere with shorts and t-shirt in SF during sunset end of Aug?!?!?! OH MY!

But yeah, I've had some twinges about LA/SD -- I always expected the last night of Philly to be off the hook, just never expected that ALL the shows would be so kick ass.

So my beef is more with the actual Backspacer Tour dates -- I would think West Coast leg folks would be a little steamed at what they saw compared to Philly? But Philly really is it's own thing as we're seeing. And now that they've dusted off all these gems and rare songs, will they bust these out in Aus/NZ??? (And I hope they do for ya'll!)

IN THE END, I'm actually really ok with what I saw (OLF, LA2, SD), I totally got the shows and songs I needed to hear. They were really good at sprinkling just a few rare tunes into each show of the West Coast Leg. And I got to hear 9/11ths of Backspacer!!!

And I can't tell you how awesome Ben Harper and Relentless 7 was -- take them ANY DAY over social distortion or Bad Religion (seen 'em already). SO COOL that BHR7 is finishing off the tour for Australia/NZ -- makes sense, he's huge over there. The two sets of his I saw were incredible, very different (well, 4/8 songs the same, but totally different vibe, dif order). And again ... UNDER PRESSURE! OMFG!

So as I said -- I think West Coast Backspacer Leg folks have more to potentially grumble about than the summer tour, and in the end, I don't really think it's called for. West Coast had the opportunity to catch like 9 shows really -- and enough can not be said about seeing the band in a 6,000 seat amphitheatre!

So I got a beautiful outside festival powerhouse performance, a wonderfully intimate unveiling of the new stuff at the Gibson, and a kick-ass wrap-up in Ed and Matt's hometown that had Eddie rambling on more than ever!

I was at the Berlin gig, and as you may know, they havent been to Sweden since 2000 and we here in the Nordic countrys havent heard a new song since then  (I was in Copenhagen -07).

    So for me it was a total of 12 new songs live in Berlin. So the answer to you is;

    -95, Stockholm (MirrorBall Tour)
    -00, Stockholm
    -07, Copenhagen
    -09, Berlin
    -10, Berlin
