New article in today's Metro newspaper updating the SEPTA strike...and it ain't looking good:

SEPTA strike looms large
Friday, October 30, 2009

If SEPTA and the union representing 4,700 of its operators and mechanics don't have a deal by Saturday at 12:01 am, the head of the union says there will be a strike.

"I felt as though we waited long enough since March and at some point you need a deadline," said Willie Brown, president of Transport Workers Union Local 234.

The union and SEPTA hunkered down Thursday to discuss wages, benefits and pensions in the key part of negotiations as the strike deadline looms.

SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney said that talks will continue.

"We've got plenty of time to talk," he said. "We're willing to talk 24 hours a day."

The strike would come just in time to wreak havoc with travel to Game 3 of the Phillies-Yankees World Series game in South Philadelphia. There is also a Pearl Jam concert Saturday night.

Here's a link to info (from SEPTA) on what will/will not be running if the strike occurs:

Well, this just means if you are from out of town, arrive at the venue early and drink at the pre-parties all day.

Yeah similar plan here, we were thinking arrive early (by car, with coolers/drinks packed) at the venue, pick up tickets, hop on subway to center city to eat/hang out, then back to south Philly where we can tailgate for the rest of the evening. Shitty.

Depends what you want to see. Alot of sights are within walking distance for the most part. Then you'd just have to get a cab to the sports complexes. Although, now with no SEPTA, there will be that many more cars on the road.

How safe is it to do this? I'm a girl and I've heard some not great things about South Philly.

Well South Philly isn't nearly as bad as North Philly, but the fact is it really is quite a hike, so I don't think you'd really want to entertain the idea.

I'd definitely say take a cab to center city (fairly quick cab ride) and once in center city everything is basically in walking distance. Then just take a cab back to the sports complexes (south Philly) before the show.

My concern is with traffic getting down to the sports complexes. Will traffic be so bad that I won't be able to get through in a cab? Also, what about returning from the show? How available will cabs be?

This was my plan too. We were going to go sightseeing, etc. and then hop the train later afternoon and head down. We'll see I guess.

When the transit strike happened in NYC, it was hard to get a cab but I think you're right, the most difficult part will be getting back as everyone will be leaving at once.

I just googled it and it's about 3 miles from the Spectrum to the Walnut-Locust station, which is near where I'm staying. Not close but not impossible to walk.

I think it's a long but doable walk, my concern is the safety of the area. Will that 3 mile walk take me through the not-so-safe parts of Philly?

Damn. This is bad news... Saturday after the show will be a nightmare if it happens!

    ugh.

tuesday was so simple taking the rail from the airport to 30th st station, then just jumping on the orange line to take straight down. my hotel was on walnut/locust as well.

now when i come in from a train in RI at 5.30 saturday...i'll be stuck at 30th st and have to rustle up a cab...

the walk from where my hotel was? it IS doable...but it seemed rather lenghty to me. but remember it IS halloween and the freaks DO come out at night. or day.

  • The walk from the Spectrum to Center City (Walnut/Locust, Rittenhouse, City Hall, etc) is long, but doable, and if there's a strike there will probably be people walking the whole way with you. With that kind of a crowd, I wouldn't worry about safety, and with a Phillies win (saturday), there will likely be people out and about on Broad Street. I would stick to Broad Street until you get past Lombard or so, then head wherever you need to.
