George Washington or Tappan Zee?

I'm driving down to Philly from Boston tomorrow, and it's been awhile since I've driven thru/past NYC, so I want to know just how bad the traffic is on I-95 in and around NYC at 2 or 3 in the afternoon?

It just seems like if you take the Tappan Zee, you are going too far out of the way, and it might not compensate for the traffic you'll hit, plus I've heard you can hit traffic on the Tappan Zee route, although I've never seen it before. I've gone both ways in the past, but it's never been settled in my mind which is best.

Please assist!

I used to live in Providence, and will swear by taking the Tappan Zee at that time of day. It may look a little out of the way, but once you hit the highway in NJ after the bridge it's smooth sailing. You stay away from all the NYC traffic and tolls too. plus it's a beautiful drive. You can always stop at the monster mall Palisades in West Nyack for a pit stop too. that place is incredible.

Yeah, I'm coming from CT and try to avoid NYC like the plague. I will be taking the Tappan Zee tomorrow.
