Figured I need to hit one of these famous places up for my first ever visit to Philly. Any Philly natives or past visitors have a preference?

Any reason? Any big taste differences b/w the two? More cheese put on by one over the other or somethin?

Go with a freind and get one from each place and split it. They are right accross the street from each other.
  • I did some research on the topic and the consensus is a deli called Cosmi's which is around the corner for Pat's and Geno's. Cosmi's has the highest rated Philly Steak in several publications, but it's not a dine-in type place, you get it to go or eat on one of the small tables outside.

I plan to try all three

Ha. Great idea. I'll have my gf check out the opposite one so I can try both.

I had Pat's before and it was TERRIBLE! You couldn't even chew through the steak.

    Go to Jim's or Campos.

i think everyone from the area will tell you neither pat's nor geno's is all that great.... but if you want to go and check it out for the tourist aspect of it, i'd say pat's. geno's is all grizzle. ick.

This will be my first trip to Philly, but I hear this is the way to go. Have heard nothing but bad reviews for both of these places (they refer to them as tourist traps).

I am definitely going to check out Tony Luke's and John's Roast Pork which are both a little SE of Pat's and Geno's I think. If only I had more than one stomach so I could fit in more cheesesteaks!

Neither... Jim's or John's Roast Pork

or if you find yourself all the way up in Northeast Philly, try Chink's steaks and a milkshake.

I agree with you 100%. Pat's was the worst cheesesteak I have ever had. Deangelo's is 10000 times better and it's a huge chain. I'd say that Pat's was one of the worst sandwiches in general I have ever had.

if i was buying a sandwich in South Philly , I'd hit John's or Ishkabibble on South St . (for a chicken cheese steak) . Or go to Warmdaddy's on Columbus Blvd. for a little blues music and southern cuisine .That said, I'll probably hit Primo's in Media for an italian hoagie since it is on my way.

Neither - Anywhere else is better. There is a great all night place in South Philly right at the entrance/exit of the Schuykill Expressway (76) called Phil's. It is across from a 7-11 at 23rd and Passyunk Ave. Phil's steaks are great, they are open all night, you don't have to waste time going to the Northeast or waiting in line at Geno's and Pat's.

  • Seriously? Neither place?? This would be a bit of a disappointment to me. I’ve only had Pat’s about 5 years ago or so and we waited in line for about 45 minutes. When we finally got our sandwiches everyone agreed the wait was well worth it. Has it gone downhill? Are you all too kool to go to the ‘tourist’ place? How are the other places different? Are they more popular right now? Not trying to say anyone is wrong or anything so don’t take it that way, I am just curious what the actual deal is.

yah, i figured I'd get some "dont go to either one" responses from the locals. which i guess I asked for, so I wont complain. I only hae a few free hours in Philly, so I didnt want to veer far from where I was staying or the spectrum. genos and pats are the closest going b/w the doubletree in city center and the spectrum. the others mentioned (which I would love to try) are a little out of the way for me.

thanks for all of your responses though

Quite simply: both are well known, and neither is a top tier steak & cheese joint as far as I am concerned.

Interesting. So you are saying they are good, but there are better? Alright, I can handle that I guess. Guess it's all a matter of opinion. Seems like most locals are leaning away from those two choices though. So, here area couple questions.....where to go for a good original whiz sandwich? How about the best option as far as parking?

If you don't want to drive to Steve's which is outside of town:

    Jim's (on South Street)
    Tony Luke's
Cosmi's (never been but heard great things)

If anybody is staying near the Reading market, you can get anything you could possibly want under one roof and the Cheese Steaks at a little booth in there were outstanding.
