I just got an audioquest carbon fiber brush and some stylus cleaner last night, so did some quality cleaning and spun some No Code vinyl last night. Damn, what a fine record! The tension of Sometimes straight into the kick assedness of Hail, Hail is musical gold. I just love this album so much.

I’ve been on the vinyl is great bandwagon for awhile now. I do have everything but Benny Hall and love them all, but my turntable has always been somewhat substandard. I have been spinning my records on a Denon 29F. It certainly doesn’t sound terrible, but the table itself definitely doesn’t give off an air of quality.

Anyhoo, I just received what I hope is a pretty decent turntable upgrade from the old man last night. He gave me his Marantz 6350 (direct drive) that he purchased new in the 70s. The turntable itself is pretty much absolutely immaculate except one of the spring loaded is feet is broken, and the hokey plastic the thing that holds the tone arm in place as seen better days. Does anyone have any experience with this type of unit? Is it pretty good? I’ll have to buy a preamp for it, and then fix the foot and tone arm hold thingy, but, other than that, I’m hoping it will be in fine working order.

I know that in a perfect world, I should buy a Rega, Pro-ject, etc, but this is what I have to work with. Any input would be appreciated.

The Marantz 6350 is a nice, sweet sounding table. If it is in perfect working condition; you got yourself a sweet deal!

All that really matters is whether you like how it sounds. Screw what everyone else thinks!

P.S. Buy yourself eight neoprene mouse pads (the kind with the soft fabric top, not the hard plastic top) and neatly stack two under each foot of the tunrtable. It will provide some nice, inexpensive isolation for the table.

Make sure they are all the same size and the same neoprene mousepads, that way they stack perfectly on top of each other. If you want to go overboard, buy 12 neoprene mousepads and stack three high, under each foot. Makes quite a difference in the tables sound and isolation.

I am entering this world now. I felt in love with it. I don't have golden ears so I don't need any kick ass equipament... at least for now. Purchase High End Gear in Brazil is expensive as hell.

The only thing bad is to buy PJ vinyl records... You simple can't find it from a trusted source. People do charge a lot for a used PJ record.

I was wondering if they will ever do remasters from the studio albuns. Reissues in 45rpm and 180g like RTI did for Metallica records. (And I think Metallica doesn't have such a intricate sound that deserves this kind of treatment)

I would love to have Yield ... double LP in 180g in 45rpm.

I know it's a hype thing to say... But I am a hype kind of fella. =D

I would love some high quality reissues of the studio albums as well. I'd like to own backup copies of each album as a just in case I wreck one kind of thing, but there is no way I can afford to pay the kind of prices these things are going for!

    What's your price point?

Do you want something new (currently being manufactored) or something vintage...old...used?

I guess it doesn't matter; probably new if they sound good; around $150.

I have been happy with my Denon DP-29F. I would call it a good (non-upgradable) entry level turntable but nothing better than that. That set me back $150 about 3 years ago. I don't spin vinyl all the time or anything, but I have never had any trouble with it. I don't really have any complaints about it (except for the incredibly light weight and cheap look of it), but there is obviously bigger and better out there, too. Y'know what I mean?

And, I should add, one major reason I am upgrading my turntable to the Marantz is that it seems odd to me to spin my valuable vinyl on a turntable that is worth less than the actual record itself. If that sounds stupid, then so be it. :)

ledvedder77 is right. At that price point the Denon DP-29F is about all you can go for. Any other turntable by any other manufactor at that price point is typically either the same, or cheaper and less reliable.

There really aren't many options at that price point for good quality. Of course you can shop around and check out ebay and .......

    http://www.audiogon.com/

If you hunt around a bit in the "Turntables" section, or use the search function by typing in manufactors like....Rega, Denon, Marantz, Technics and Music Hall. You might come across something in your price range that someone is selling.

Otherwise, I think, if I were you, I would stick with the Denon DP-29F, for now. Or save up your money for another 3 to 6 months and then get something better.

I borrowed the old man's old Pioneer amp and to see if the Marantz 6350 still had any magic left in it. I cleaned the stylus, and then I spun a record I don't particularly care about (ZZ Top - either Eliminator or Afterburner). I only had one speaker hooked up to it - a center channel speaker at that - and it sounded great!

Next up was a Pearl Jam record. I went with Vitalogy figuring it's one of the easy to replace vinyls (just in case something went wrong). First, I played it on my Denon DP-29F through the full compliment of front and back speakers. Then I played it on the Marantz 6350 through just the single center channel speaker.

The Marantz sounded twice as good as the Denon. I was totally blown away! I knew my Denon had a bit of a tinny sound, but listening to Vitalogy back to back first on the Denon and then on the Marantz really emphasized the difference in sound quality between the 2 turntables.

Next up - although probably not till next weekend - is No Code or Binaural (or maybe both!!) on each turntable through the same speakers.

After that test, I expect I will be in the market for a decent, budget friendly preamp, so I can run the Marantz through my Onkyo receiver. :) I'm thinking something in the $100-$200 range??? Anyone have any advice on preamps???

You're talking about an inexpensive, nice sounding phone stage pre amp, correct?

    If so...........

Have you checked the stylus? It might be worn and need replacing (or the cartridge even). What's it got on it at the moment?

It has what appears to be a brand new Shure M91ED. I'm assuming it's a pretty middle of the road cartridge for quality. Hopefully it's good enough to get me by for awhile!
