PA Pork at its Saltiest
Every month my car insurance bill is debited from my checking account like clockwork, keeping me legal to be on the road. I have never gone even a single day without car insurance, even though I disagree with it being unlawful to do so. Recently, however, I received a letter from the state of PA saying that since my insurance had lapsed at “some point” in the past I would have to forfeit my registration for three months. Since I don’t know when “some point” is, I assumed maybe they meant the time period before I was 16 years of age – way back in 1995. To my dismay, that was not the message. It seems that the state government has so much time on their hands and excessive workforce that they harass people like me who have done nothing wrong and committed no crime.
So I called the DMV. After waiting on hold for seemingly hours, I finally talked to a state employee. I suggested they call my insurance company to get the insurance information so that they could reinstate my registration. Nope, of course they couldn’t do that, because they “cannot make outbound phone calls.” I suggested the person that works there use her personal cell phone to contact them, but of course that wouldn’t work either. You see, the state just has talking heads working in their offices, nobody who will actually serve their customers (civilians of PA) or make a situation right when they are wrong. It is, of course, my responsibility to fix their error.
Nope, I will not spend my valuable time (60 hours a week at work with a 4-month old at home) on hold with my insurance company explaining which information needs to be sent where because a 3rd party is harassing me about a mistake of their own. “Join the gang Paul, Join the gang, Join the GANG!”
Yes I was caught eventually driving with a “suspended registration.” After the cop gave me a sobriety test (who drives at 2am sober?) I heard a rustling noise from the rear of my car. He took my damn license plate and I was 40 miles from home. I felt like a fugitive driving home that night with no form of identification on my car.
Two days later, a cop knocked on my door in the typical egomaniacal “I want daddy’s ding-a-ling” authoritarian sort of way (most cops have a secret fetish for father’s penis) to inform me that I couldn’t park the car in the street without registration. I do not have a driveway or anywhere else to go with the car. Any suggestions from the egomaniac cop in regards to a solution? Of course not.
Today I spent three hours on hold, between the state and my insurance company, trying to get the information I need to reinstate my insurance. I will have to pay $50 to get my license plate back. I value my time at $100 per hour, and since the state took five hours of my time I expect them to repay me $550. In addition, I have a history of anxiety issues (sheesh I wonder why) and since I haven’t been able to sleep for the past week because of this issue (sleep deprivation is torture) I would like the state to also compensate me $100,000 for this harm, for a grand total of $100,550. I will take that in an annuity, if that works better for the <s>gang</s> state.
Well that is all just wishful thinking and hyperbole in regards to the compensation I will get. But I wonder, if I had caused the government this much of a problem and not the other way around, how long would I be sitting in jail?

Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.

Actually had lunch today with a buddy of mine who is also my insurance agent....he told to use the on-line method to provide the state my insurance info....he says that everyone that has heard about being mailed in....also gets fucked up.
also, even with proof....what's the point? punishment? it just seems...odd.
it would seem a lot more sensible to do so at the time of the incident, not years later. eh well.
as to the rest of the comments, i'll leave that as all part of your *rant*....haha.
good luck with that, what an utter pain in the asssss...

I ended up calling the department of treasury in Washington. The gave me a number to an federal investigator and I told them the story about the company that said they forgave a debt I owed which lead the IRS to think I owed them more money. I told him I look up this company on the net and there were tons of people going thru the same scam and I could not understand why they were not being investigated. He said he would investigate this company but in all honesty even if they were crooks, his boss would have to approve taking it to court and if they had bigger fish to fry the state would not prosecute. So it seems some times crime does pay! And I will have to pay the IRS $900 that I can't afford to fight. I feel for you! I know what your going thru.
