An ice-skating bear has turned on its trainers, killing one and wounding another.
A Russian circus troupe were rehearsing for a performance in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, when the incident happened.
Workers had to drag the bear away during the attack, according to the director of the arena, Kurmangazy Isanayev.
The exits were closed off as staff waited for the emergency services.
Police shot the bear dead at the scene.
The attack comes days after Sky News exposed the death-defying stunts circus animals are forced to perform in Russia.
More than 3,000 animals perform in circuses in Russia but there are no laws banning cruelty.

Why do I find it so hard to sympathise with these victims.
I feel very sorry for the bear.

Of course they had to shoot the bear on the spot.. for being a bear.

The circus is a joke, and so are the people that run it.

Its the 21st century.. why the fuck are we still getting off on watching wild animals do tricks and interact with humans?

    Come on, humans. Grow up.

They way I see it, that bear earned his freedom. Not death.

We are so fucking primitive we don't even realize it.

My vent of the evening. 8-)

That's what you get for torturing wild animals.

    Circuses with animals are despicable.

I agree with all the comments. That poor bear was probably with them since it was born, condemned to a life of indignity and torture. They could never have released it back into the wild, it would have lasted 5 minutes. If the morons that watch this sort of cruelty stopped then it would stop.

    RIP Mr Bear

They are either born in captivity or lil' cubs taken from their mothers in the wild. Naturally, these animals cannot be released in the wild but there are organisations that take care of 'rescued' circus animals. They are very 'damaged' and traumatised. Shameful practice, it is.

I couldn't watch your post - might be very upsetting
we've banned the circus in our family- just couldn't go watch that anymore- its really nice when your kids agree
  • I can, kind of, understand the need for certain kinds of zoos i.e. more along the lines of a wildlife park that provide the animals with a clean, healthy environment. Unfortunately, humankind's desire to use and destroy everything will never slow and, left in the wild, no doubt many species would be hunted into extinction.

Circuses however are perverse in their use of animals and should have been made illegal by the WWF a long time ago.
It's gonna be a glorious day...

Yeah but if that bear could also shoot a puck into a net whilst on skates, you'd love to see him in a Blackhawks uniform.

    Hehehehehe.
    This weekend we rock Portland
  • Gee... I wonder how we could prevent tragedies like this from happening again?

ummm...maybe by NOT PUTTING ICE SKATES ON A FUCKING BEAR!

    Ok...so I get the circus.

But zoos? Why? Zoos are essential to teaching kids to respect animals and learn about a much bigger world than the dogs on their street. I guess it depends on the zoos, but all the ones I have gone to are very educational and provide a great service (for both people and animals).

Yeah Cincy,I used to feel this way, and took my young daughter(5 at the time) to many zoos.
They can be educational and kids can view animals they may never get to see up close.
But, the last time I went, a tiger was pacing back and forth in a 10 x 5 cage.just would not stop pacing.
The polar bear was similar, swimmimg in the same pattern in a smallish pool.
    kinda depressing.
    Have not been back since.

  • I went to the Indianapolis Zoo for the first time last summer. Everytime my kids would say the animals were doing something, all I could say was that they looked depressed. And even a few of them homicidal. I know I will never go again.

If it weren't for zoos, children.....the American Bison would be extinct....the majority of birds native to Guam would also be extinct....many zoos are literally acting as arks preserving some species entirely or genetic diversity for other species....the zoo that I formerly worked at was working with other U.S. zoos and the Russian Interior Department on restoring Red-naped Cranes (I believe that was the species) populations by breeding the birds in captivity, delivering fertile eggs to Siberia in order for them to hatch there and be released into the wild.

yes, zoos are necessary evils i think. i see both good and bad in em. circus animals tho? total BS. animals should not simply be used only for our amusement. i recall a thread on the MT on this topic, so i won't rehash here. :P

in a perfect world, the bear would have spun around during the struggle, slicing main jugular arteries with the blade of his skate, killing off his captives right before a grand escape.

i don't, and never will, sympathize with people who die at the hands of animals in situations like this.
bears weren't meant to wear ice skates, just like lions weren't meant to jump through rings of fire.

People shouldn't be training wild animals for these things in the first place, besides I'm sure that bear had been pushed to the limits, and probably abused between the training and the captivity... it's NOT NATURAL to begin with...

God. if they're not being slaughtered for sake of a ivory decoration on a mantle piece they're being whipped and tortured in circuses or neglected and abused in zoos.

    People make me sick.

    No iv'e not seen that.
But at the local zoo (which has come under fire many times) they abuse the animals and I don't understand how they are allowed to stay open. They were in the news for not feeding the animals, and the latest one was that they put zebras in the buffalo pens, and the zebras had heart attacks because they were too frightened
