The Big Clusterf**k, aka S. Philly traffic/transit on 10/31

Anybody ready for this? I mean I'm all about having a crazy atmosphere, with it being the anticipated 10/31 PJ show, Halloween, the closing of the Spectrum, and now most likely World Series Game 3 (starting at exactly the same time as the show). But I can't even IMAGINE how effed up the traffic and subway situation will be that afternoon/evening. Getting in will be bad enough, but obviously get in early, not the last minute, otherwise forget seeing the first half of the first set. Its the getting out that could shape up to be a nightmare...the only thing we can hope for is that either A) the baseball game goes quick and the show goes extra long (preferable! :D ), or B) the baseball game goes really really long and the show lets out before that. Either way, I'm seeing a massive clusterfuck shaping up for that night :?

The game is not starting till 8:30 or so and run usually at least 3 and 1/2 hours. PJ takes the stage like 8:45 so unless Ed and the gang play a 3 hour and 20 minute set like Bruce did last night the show will be well over by the time the baseball game ends.

eh...what's to worry about. We will all be leaving a Pearl Jam show...duh...and it's halloween and we have all night. Fun will be had.
  • There was actually a similiar situation last year. Phillies WS game and The Who concert the same night. It was on a Sunday though and it wasn't Halloween, but honestly getting to the concert was great. We drove into the city and took the Broad Street line and had no problems. The Who concert was a less than 2 hours and the game wasn't over yet so getting home was not bad either because it was just the concert goers on the subway.

I am dreading the traffic next week as well -- I am going to all four show and live in suburbs. Am going to try to take Septa whenever possible especially if there is more than one event taking place in South Philly !!

    Good luck to all !

I think you can count on PJ playing a 3 hour show on halloween, possibly longer.
  • In terms of number of people, it will be no different than an Eagles game. I may be a little off, but I think the Linc holds 65k and the Spectrum and Citizens Bank Park hold a combined 61k. It won't be totally clear down there but that area has seen worse like the parade last year. It's on a Saturday so you don't have rush hour traffic to worry about either.

I don't see it happening. My guess is 2.5 at most and probably closer to 2 hr 15 minutes.

I am wondering just how early we need to get there on 10/31. We would prefer to take the kids to the zoo or to the Franklin instead of spending the day in traffic or in the parking lot, you know? I received an email about the Flyers game earlier that day, and we all are hockey fans, so that has some appeal -- and would be one way to circumvent traffic worries. On the other hand, the kids (or mom and dad) might conk out early if the day contains both hockey and PJ, so....

We are not local to Philly. In general Philly traffic is not nearly as bad as NYC traffic, but we have been stuck in some memorable traffic jams down there before. If we are staying downtown, and plan to see the opening acts, how much time do we need to allow to get to the venue?

I hope so, but you can't count on that. Only been to two 3 hour PJ shows out of 48. Went to 2 three hour plus Bruce shows in a week.

  • The other thing to consider that I forgot to mention is that tailgating is a gimme at any event down there. I'm pretty sure people show up to tailgate at noon when the circus is in town let alone a Phillies World Series game/Pearl Jam concert. You'll have a lot of people making their way to the parking lots early afternoon so that will help to dissipate the pre-show traffic that you normally see at venues.

If I was lucky enough to be heading down there on the 31st, I don't think traffic would even be on my radar as a concern.

My favorite was that people used to show up like 10 or 11 at night to tail gate for Wing Bowl. The event started at 6 am. There used to be trash can fires and people huddled around them with coolers all night. It looked something like out of a refugee camp or a bad movie before the venue started locking the parking gates until 4 am.

Yeah but don't you have to for the wing bowl? I never went but I think I remember that seating is a free for all.

One of my favorite memories was of a business person's special Phillies game when I was in college. We decided at 8 AM to not go to class, got to the parking lot at 9 AM for a 1 o'clock game and it was already packed with people tailgating for a meaningless game between a shitty Phillies team and an even shittier Pirates team.

An average PJ show is about 2:15 nowadays right? 10-31 aint your average PJ show. How long was the last nite of the LA stand? 31 songs I believe.

Id be very surprised if its not at least 2.45, they realize the expectations are sky high for these shows (and especially the last nite), they aint gonna disappoint

No worries here as I plan to show up very early, like 11:30 , due to attending the 1PM Flyers game.
