Just listened to Vitalogy for the first time in a while...

And it's unbelievable. I haven't listened to Vitalogy in years and decided to pop it in because I've pretty much worn my Backspacer out. I forget just how good studio versions of those songs are. Last Exit, Not for You, Tremor Christ, Nothingman, Satans Bed, Immortality..... jesus how could I forget? Thats why I love this band. Every time a new album comes out, I listen to it non stop for weeks and weeks, then when I need a break, I "rediscover" an old album. Last time it was No Code, now its Vitalogy. Perhaps next time it will be Riot Act?

  • Except for the weird "fillers" Vitalogy doesn't have one weak song. It's such high quality. The rockers are really good and Nothingman and Immortality are haunting.

STBC and Betterman might be the weakest songs, and I mean they are not weak.

why do lots of people criticize the "filler songs" on vitalogy. i love these songs and think they make the album complete. they also add a haunting sound to the overall feel of the album. and bugs is freaking hilarious. quality "filler," quality disc.
  • I just broke it out for the 1st time in a couple of years this weekend and thought the same. It brought back great memories.

Vitalogy is my favorite PJ record, I love the live versions of the Vitalogy songs, but listen to the studio version often.

  • I remember getting the LP the day it came out because that was all you could get for a week before the CD came out. My stereo/record player setup was still at my Mom's house but I had a smaller setup and that was good enough.

I am old enough to remember well the days where there were only LP's and cassettes. I was in the Columbia House Record Club when all you could get was vinyl (and have it all to this day) and after years of only CD's being 'forced' to get the LP on the release day (I would of course have bought it anyway) did truly remind me of the good old days when the artwork was important and the smell of fresh paper and vinyl and all that good stuff.

It was so cool bringing that record home and poring over every page like the dead sea scrolls. Oh so genuine......

    Think I'll listen to that same record . . .right . . . now...

The songs on Vitalogy that aren't played live are not fillers. It's a shame that a lot of people don't realize this by now.

"Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me" scares me. Besides that, Vitalogy is a fucking awesome album!! It was the album that finally made me join the (then) Vitalogy Health Club, aka the Ten Club.

It's a matter of opinion... personally I'd say Bugs isn't filler by FoxyMop is. Pry To might be, where as Aye DAvanita is more worked out. Either way, outside of FoxyMophandlemamathatsme I listed to the entire album no skipping.

VITALOGY is fucking gorgeous! In and out....everything about it is so fitting. The music, the lyrics, the artwork, even the place it was made. All fits...you get that feeling of completeness from it. And TREMOR CHRIST....aaah, TREMOR FUCKING CHRIST!!! My 15- year old heartbreak...my obsession, my desire....my passion...
Just thinking about that album brings chills.....

    I love VITALOGY :)

I actually did the same thing for S/T a couple of weeks ago, and granted I'm not comparing S/T to Vitalogy, but the principle is still the same. I listened to BS many times, and when I needed a break, I kicked on an older album and found a new level of appreciation for it. And by the way, let me add that for all of you who are missing some sick McCready solo work on BS, try going back and giving S/T a listen...goddamn! Anyways a great point by the OP, fully agree, and probably one of the biggest reasons why so many of us love this band. 8-)

I guess it's probably because if 'Hard To Imagine' and a studio version of 'Out Of My Mind' would have replaced 'Bugs' and 'HeyFoxyMopHandleMama,It'sMe' (which could have been religated to B-Sides on singles), 'Vitalogy' may have been considered by many as one of their best efforts to date.
    Maybe. What do you think?

That's the great thing about art... it is subjective.
I feel that 'Out Of My Mind' and 'Hard To Imagine' are better songs than 'Bugs' and 'Hey,FoxyMopHandleMama'... and you don't. And we can both go our own ways.

Great call - imagine that! Or is it too hard to imagine? :? That would definitely make it their best album.

Actually, I agree with those that have said that Bugs has its place on the album, but HeyFoxyMopHandleMama,It'sMe is something I've never ever enjoyed listening to nor want to listen to again.

I must say that Vitalogy gives me the strongest sense of nostalgia when I listen to it - I am instantly transported back in time when i put it on. Stronger than any other album in that way - so atmospheric. Can't believe the band was in such turmoil when they made it hey...
