  • I hear ya. I get tired of digging through shit to find good new music today. I get lazy and just listen to old stuff after a while.

I find plenty of new music, as I'm on a constant search for something to suit my every mood.
But my adolescence was the early-mid '90's, and I don't think I'll ever shed the notion that that time was a high point for rock. Mostly we're right. But I also realize some of it is nostalgia. I also think radio is so vastly different, and constrained now that almost none of the good stuff makes it through that filter, and most of what we hear is crap. You do have to be a tad more intrepid to get to the good/great stuff.

Oh, and didn't some band come out of Seattle come around in the 90's?
  • I agree! 90's music was so much better in my opinion

The '90s were the last really original, inspired period for rock - Alice in Chains, PJ, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Weezer, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. A lot of mainstream radio rock now is very derivative of them, compared to when these bands were in vogue and being played on the radio constantly.

Yeah, personally I don't buy the argument that the 90s was better on the whole. Mainstream, MAYBE, however, the 2000s have brought us Wilco, The Arcade Fire, Ryan Adams (solo), Broken Social Scene and all their offshoot bands, Jack White everything, the list truly goes on and on. Music is fine.

said the same thing today after i heard sex and candy, and then followed by closing time on the radio. ahhh, the '90's.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

'90s was a lot better in terms of mainstream music. PJ, RHCP, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Phish, DMB, AiC, Nirvana, Soundgarden...

This decade has seen some really, really good bands, but they're just not arena rock acts (MMJ, Wilco, Arcade Fire).

I love the music of this decade, but damnit I want to see some good new bands in huge arenas...small shows are fun, but...

    It wasn't all good though.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

  • Maybe you should specify early 90's. Late 90's had a lot of bull shit.

From 1991-1995 mainstream (called alternative at the time) rock was at its pinnacle. Maybe only like 1969-1973 was a better five year period. Really, how many great albums came out in those years? And MTV was very responsible for the exposure of all of the great, kind of underground bands to blow up. Sure, others have listed great bands playing this decade, but really it's not close for mainstream rock. Except for the other period I mentioned. Okay probably then, but that's it. :)

I've never heard anything from any of these bands i've got into. Given them all a try. Jack White just reminds me of "that guy" in high school you knew was just going to burn the building down.
Glad you are finding stuff you like though. You are having better luck than me.

  • I dont know, I really think the 90s beats the 2000s for music, hands down...im not saying there isnt good music out there now (cuz there is) but nothing out there today or in the 00s decade can hold a candle to the 90s in my opinion.

I dont understand the fascination with bands like Kings of Leon, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, etc.
Those bands are crap to me. No way they compare to the likes of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Radiohead, Rage, Tool, etc. I listen to the newer bands and it just makes me want to turn on some Pearl Jam or Radiohead even more.

Not to take anything away from those who do enjoy those bands, but its just not for me. I really dont think theyre that good, and Im not just saying that cuz im "stuck in the 90s" or whatever.

Which is all the more reason that Im glad Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Tool, STP and Rage are all currently together.

Even when its all said and done, the music will never die. The music is forever.
  • The 90's had some great hard rock (Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Living Colour, Soundgarden) but it also had some of the weakest, lamest "rock" music ever made (Third Eye Blind, Goo Good Dolls, Matchbox 20).

I have a slightly different prespective as a lot of you I think as I'm only 18 years old. I love the 90s stuff, but I truly don't think on the whole it's better than what we have now, other than the fact you need to dig a little deeper. I'm fine with digging deeper, as it means I get to see the shows in smaller venues, which is ok with me!

I feel anything Jack White touches is gold. Ryan Adams might be the best songwriter of the last 30 years, and all other bands listed are amazing.

Let me start by saying I love a lot of music from the 90s. The 90s are the reason I have the love of music I do and for that I am grateful. That being said, I think a lot of people make a blanket statement of how great the 90s were b/c of a small group of great bands that came out of the 90s. In the early 90s, commercial music was great and that's something we hadn't seen in a long time and haven't seen since. From about 95 on, commercial music was almost as bad as it is now. I said this in another thread, don't know where, but for me this has been the best year for music in a long time and I think I have said that the past two or three years. For me, it just keeps getting better.

To the people that say they don't like any of the newer music, keep looking. There is something out there for everyone.

Speaking as a teenager of the 90's there was a lot to love about music, but today's music scene has a lot of great stuff too.

I did have a GREAT 90's flash back at the Pearl Jam ACL show when Perry Ferrell came out and they played Mountain Song, although that came out in 1988. I do love 90's music, but there was TONS of good stuff in the 70's and 80's also.

I LOVED the 90's music also, I was in my 20's, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Nirvana, AIC, the whole scene was great, rock music made a come back for sure. I just think it's a bit of a stretch to say that 1991-1995 is when rock was at its pinnacle, it's just my opinion, but I think Rock and Rolls "glory days" were the 1970's, but that's just my opinion.
