Memories...

It's funny what will set off a memory. Today as I was wasting time, I didn't want to start my homeschooling session with the kids, so I started to make a large pot of yellow split pea soup. As I was cutting the carrots, celery, onions and garlic...the memory of my mom popped into my head. She's be gone for about 27 years now. I thought of her soup and how much I hated it. She never chopped the vegetables small enough! I chop the vegetable quite small. I never liked any of her soup except her pasta fagioli...we called it pasta fazul??? I don't know...we were weird Italians. We also made something called spaghetti cake...now it's not really cake but it is sweet and delicious...no other Italian I have ever met has known what the hell I was talking about. Like I said, we were the weird Italians!
Anyway back to my mother...cold autumn days, like today, were days she made her soup with some homemade bread. The kids all fought over the Pope's nose as we called it. Her and her Marlboros. Today I miss her a lot. Strange, I don't think of her on a daily basis but this past year and a half she's been in my thoughts quite a bit. Maybe it's the life she led...maybe it's the similarities I've noticed over this past year or so. The fiery Italian temper that burns so hot...it burns itself out quickly. The laughter or should I say cackle when something funny hits us hard. I suppose I wish I could have known her as a person not just a mom. Insights she could have shared that she gleaned from her own life. I wish we could have been friends....and I could have taught her how to cut her vegetables smaller!

every now and then I also will just remember something out of the blue about my parents.
makes me happy and sad all at the same time.

Hail, Hail!!!
yes...I feel this...I cried and laughed a little. Makes everything balance out.
I miss my Mom so much and I also just get her now - the things I remember from when I was young-
I get it now
I understand how she felt cause now I'm so much like her.
I think she'd say we were friends but I didn't understand like I do now.
I'm sorry for that cause all I want is to be understood.
My kids and I are friends, I think they'd say, but they don't understand me.
