Anyone else here a John Mayer fan? I really like his songs and his skills as a guitarist are some of the best out there right now. Seeing this guy in a concert a few years back was just amazing; he would go off on these epic 5-10 min solos

It's a love hate relationship. I hate his pop manufactured image, and the more syrupy aspects of his catalogue, and his celebrity hoaring. But I love his live performances, especially with the trio. I think there's a cool person in there who's kinda getting corrupted by the LA lifestyle.

I like him. I think the pop manufactured image wasnt his doing frankly. Or if it was, it isnt anymore. The guy, after putting out an album that was big on pop radio, he starts this blues band, and releases a blues record. Thats hardly something that is gonna win you more teenybopper fans, nor is it going to get you airplay on any radiostation.

Secondly, the guy is a majorly talented guitarist. Rolling Stone suggested he is one of the best of our generation. And this may be an exmaple of rolling stone being right on.

I used to be a music elitist. Not interested in music that wasnt underground. And it seems nowadays alot of people act this way.

For me though, I dont think there is anything wrong with writing a great pop song. Tiny Dancers a pop song, and its also one of the best songs ever written. Pop doesnt always have to mean stupid or shallow.

Lastly, I dont get the sense that John is some kind of celebrity who demands attention. He is, or was one of the biggest music stars around. I dont think he goes out to the bars or is videotaped being drunk and all that, like some of the other stars thesedays.

i like 'john mayer trio' better than 'john mayer'. i hate his 'pop' crap. i saw a tv show with john mayer playing with buddy guy a few years back. WOW!
  • Absolutely a fan. He's a great guitarist.

Absolutely love the John Mayer Trio album. His bluesy stuff is definitely where his heart and talent lies. Even "Where the Light Is" is a great live performance.

Here's a great vid of John and B.B. The student learning from the master. I like how John is always very respectful and grateful toward B.B. and lets everyone know about it.

I like his music, but was never a big fan of his persona until I saw this:

He may be a little full of himself, but he seems like he's fully aware of that fact (in theory, anyway...)
I smile, but who am I kidding...
