The Newly Crowned Miss Hampton University Is Not Black OMG!
The historically black Hampton University in Virginia crowned Nikole Churchill its first non-black Miss HU last week, causing what the local newspaper, the Daily Press, politely called a “division on campus.” As in, some students walked out of her crowning ceremony, apparently unable to accept the possibility that anyone who is not African-American could be picked to represent the school in a pageant that centered around evening wear, swimsuit, and talent competitions. (Another transgression: She doesn’t even attend classes on the main campus!)

The 22-year-old nursing major from Hawaii, whose mother is Italian and whose father is from Guam, felt a little miffed, and she wanted to get some help from a higher source. So she wrote none other than Barack Obama, who knows a thing or two about such matters. In her letter, she described the pageant ceremony as “the best night of my life” but added that she was “sad to say that my crowning was not widely accepted and many negative comments regarding my win have been shared throughout my campus.” She asked the president if he might visit the campus “so that my fellow Hamptonians can stop focusing so much on the color of my skin and doubting my abilities to represent, but rather be proud of the changes our nation is making towards accepting diversity.”


This from the school I graduated from many years ago. I only hope those students who walked out of her crowning ceremony were upset that she didn't attend classes on the main campus because that to me is the ONLY thing to be upset about here. Then some seem to think that race relationships are getting better in this country.

Why is this such a shocker, we have an African American in the White House in 2009 for the next 4 years?

    That's pretty weak. I guess at least the walkouts chose to walk out instead of pulling a Kanye at the crowning.

    Yeah, MLK would be proud...a peaceful protest. I think people have forgotten what it's all really about.

    Amen. We should stop even communicating about race if we really want the problem to go away. But sadly, our government supports racism, so it isn't going away.

    (And we're all mixed race anyway so picking one to throw a label on anyone is just stupid)

    The part about not attending school there is huge! How can they vote her in when she doesn't go to schooll there? Have they ever voted in anyone else who didn't go to school there?
    If not, then that is the real issue, not race. I would have walked out too!

    Ok the more and more I read into this and hear from friends this story gets more laughable, vindictive and petty. Back when I went to this school it wasn't even a University it was Institute and we didn't have off campuses like Nikole attends in Virgina Beach (Hampton University @ Virginia Beach). When I attended we had 1700 students now it's over 5000 the campus she attends has 90 so I have a problem with that.

    She's not seen on the main campus even though where she attends is certainly HU and represents the entire school. There on the main campus everyone interacts and are friendly or at least back when I was there. It's just that those on the main campus never see her or even know who she is so I can understand the reaction to her win when most have no idea who she is. THEY do now though :) and those students will have to get over it. This is NOT the first time a white student has been crowned on a mostly black campus so this is nothing new or shocking to me however I can see the displeasure in her not attending her last year on the main campus.

    Churchill is not the first non-black student to be crowned at a historically black college. In April, Kentucky State University student Elisabeth Martin won the 80th homecoming queen election, making her the first white student to win.

    BTW she doesn't appear to be anything very striking to me very tall, I just hope she'll go on and represent my school to her utmost and be accepted for the student she is not for her color.
