Good news: Just heard Betterman at my office (playing over pa)
Bad news: It was some country band called Sugarland? Was not aware that this cover existed. It was awful. I won't be able to like this song anymore.

  • betterman was written by eddie back when he was in a band called bad radio. in the eighties... ive seen them perform it on youtube before. look it up... maybe that band has covered it from eddie but not vice versa. unless i dont get the jist of this thread. philly sooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnn... weeeeeeeee.......

  • My brother-in-law went to see them (Sugarland) when they came to town, and I mentioned to him that they covered Betterman, and his response made me want to shove a sharp pencil in each ear.

"That's a Pearl Jam song? I love that song."

Too bad he fell in love with it because some cute, countrified girl was singing it.
  • oof. ugh. this is not good.

    cain't fond a better main.

cannot stand the drawl of country singers. this is awful.
  • I've seen Sugarland just as many times as PJ. They have a cover album with Betterman on it that I've known about for months, but I didn't mention it here to avoid the short-sighted and obvious replies. Don't be fooled by their country label, Sugarland draw many of their live performance cues from live PJ, including many rock covers (REM and Radiohead included) as well as even show specific posters. They're worth at least one listen with an open mind.

i hate bands that take songs and cover it and pass it off like they wrote the damn thing...

that's why i hate most rap and hip hop artists. like Sean Kingston for instance, he rips off the main riff of a song and acts like he wrote it. the worst one by far is Me Love which is a rip on Led Zep's D'yer Mak'er (i can never spell that right, nor pronounce it) where he sings the whole "oh oh oh oh oh ooohhh why did you have to go" but then he adds "me love" at the end. i sickens me cause he thinks he can pull that shit off and get away with saying it's his own music

no, you don't get it. i wasn't claiming that the hillbilly version was the original, just that this cover of PJ was horrendous and should be banned.

Actually, Ed wrote Betterman when he was 14 years old, long before his Bad Radio days.

ha ha, you are asking the people here to go into something with an open mind?
i hate bands that take songs and cover it and pass it off like they wrote the damn thing...

this statement is also fucking funny. pearl jam do a lot of covers, are they trying to pass it off as their own?

  • Some of you people just amaze me..your so narrow minded its pathetic. Take a step back for a second, pearl jam covers a ton of songs, do you think the fans of every band pearl jam covers, likes the pearl jam cover of that particular bands song??? Then we have one guy in this thread calling this cover of betterman the "hillbilly version" .. really? are you kidding me? are you a bigot?

One thing I like about going to pearl jam shows, is meeting the other fans, most pearl jam fans seem smart and open minded when talking to them.. obviously this thread isnt a representation of all pearl jam fans, but it just goes to show, theres always a few rotten apples in the tree.

Anyway, I personally think Sugarland did a really good job of covering betterman, I like it alot..and I think Sugarland is a talented band with a great singer..I wish more bands covered pearl jam songs, like the song or not, I, personally, think its nice to hear my favorite band get covered and respected like that.

  • Excuse me, before I get accused of having a closed mind and being pathetic i'd like to point out that I dislike the cover because in my opinion it's shite.

I'm not one for emotional-dreary-country-girly crap and I wouldn't like it whatever they covered.

I love most of PJ's covers and I also have a very open mind, I just don't like that ^^^.

Oh and it's BETTER MAN. TWO WORDS. Jeez... is it that hard?!

I don't think Sugarland are trying to pass it off as their own, not at all. If anything it's in homage to PJ.

They saw someone with a Clash shirt on and a Zep shirt on.

Why couldn't they have just done Rock The Casbah with a banjo or something?

    This blows.
    :D Rock on!!!! :D
Seen Pearl Jam 4 times in London, once in Manchester, as well as an Eddie show at Hammersmith.

does it really make a difference? i'm sure i've seen the band write it on setlists a million times as one word. every official 2000 bootleg i have has it printed on the back as one word. i don't think how if someone spells it as one word or two really makes a lick of difference.

    Edit and also:
I don't think Sugarland are trying to pass it off as their own, not at all. If anything it's in homage to PJ.

yeah i know that, but obviously the guy who posted it doesn't think so, that's why i said i think it's funny.

It really bothers me. It's on the reverse of Vitalogy written as two words and I've rarely seen it written as one by the band... it just bothers me and i'm a bit anal... sorry.

I agree. I personally have never heard of this band, but I think they did a pretty decent job. I do not particularly care for country music and I do not know enough about this band to know if overall they're a good band with the kind of ethics and talent PJ has - but compared to some of the other PJ covers I've heard or seen on Youtube, this was pretty good. For those who didn't like, is it for any other reason than you don't like mainstream country? Taking the song at face value for what it is, they played it correctly, the vocals were pretty much spot on and in key, and the music sounded just fine. Of course it didn't sound like Ed or perhaps have the spirit or energy as seeing PJ play it live, but I personally don't see what all this fuss is for...if one person went out at bought Vitalogy after hearing this, it's a good thing! :)
