Sailing with Pearl Jam
We left the Thames River out of New London Connecticut on a 32 foot sailing boat about noon on Saturday. It was blowing hard. Once we approached the Ledge Rock Lighthouse we unfurled the jib and my friend asked me to put on some tunes. I put on the Toronto August 09 show. We cranked up the tunes and dug in. We sailed past Fishers Island New York riding the rail all the way to Watch Hill in Rhode Island. It was a one tack journey and the music drove us as spray swept over the bow onto us. We reversed tack and head back settling in Mystic Connecticut at Fort Rachel Marina. I broke open a bottle of Maker's Mark and we fortified with a couple of snorts of Bourbon, blew a bone and then off to Town. Mystic was buzzing with New Yorkers searching for leaves I am told. We ate at a Cajun place, another bourbon, and then off to Johns, a local drinking hole with a great CD jukebox which happened to have Vitalogy on it. The locals loved the choice of music. After playing several tunes (including Summerwind by Frank Sinatra), several more bourbons and ending with Immortality, we stumbled back to the Daniel Packard Inn for a Nightcap. Finding our way to the Boat, one more drink and out. The early morning sun walk us up and we set out Sunday morning. It was blowing ever harder. The high point was riding the rail while listening to McCready's solo during Amongst the waves. Truly the best Pearl Jam weekend without seeing the band I ever had.
