If it was my kid perpetrating that attack, he would get the shit beat out of him at home before I turn him in to the police.

Thankfully my kids know better than to treat anyone badly, nevermind light them on fire.

my son was sooking about something one afternoon and then he started talking about this boy at school who was hassling him. he looked at me and said, i wanted to bash him up but you wont let me. i told him its not really manners is it. and asked him how hed like it if someone bashed him up. he said he wouldnt. an affirmation that he actually is listening to me.

It's good to have kids look at something from the opposite perspective, good for you for getting it to "stick".

    Sick!

Why would someone do this? Are the punishments too lenient. That poor kid will be scarred for life.
If one of mine did something like that I'd disown them forever. What's the betting that if you met the parents you'd meet the dregs of society?

thats not a fair comment. kids sometimes do some pretty fucked up things that have nothing whatsoever to do with their parents.

Fair point, but I'd put money on it that the majority of time the parents are as bad as the kids or don't care what they do.

This is disgusting but I know from experience this kind of sickness is not a case of "kids these days".

A guy I was at school with 30 years ago was blown through the air and his entire body burnt when he was persuaded by other kids to pick up money that was lying under a car.
As he was under the car searching for the money, that was never there in the first place, they pushed a petrol soaked rag right into the exhaust and light it.The exhaust blew up and the guy was thrown through the air on fire.He survived but has been traumatised for life.

as a teacher I can tell you the family dynamic is beyond screwed up.....kids are lost these days.
  • Parents just don't seem to care these days. Their 'job' as a parent is just feed them and put clothes on their back. They leave their entire education & upbringing to school, tv and video games, they pay no attention to what they eat, watch or where they go at night but they are quick to blame everybody else when their son / daughter get's into trouble.

As a parent i thik it's their duty and help and nurture (SP???) the childs growth and develpoment through teaching values and principles, to diet to homework but i tell you when i look around at the working class in my country (UK) i just don't see that enough.

Of course it's not always the parents fault but with A LOT of disrespectful, violent scum you see these days you can tell that their parents fall into this catergory. Maybe child benifits wasn't such a great idea...

The UK is fucked up, it's getting so so bad over here. A father of 2 was beaten up not too far away from where I live and is now permanently brain damaged when a 19 year old repeatedly beat him around the head - his defence, he was 'stressed because he had split up with his girlfriend'. He got 18 months in a juvenile institution - will probably be out in less than a year. Stories like this are getting way too commonplace. There's no consistency in sentencing, no deterrents and little consequences. The wrong people are procreating and the people who should be procreating and passing on good, decent values can't afford to. It's evoluton baby ;) !

  • I think of my neighbourhood here in Mid Wilshire (between downtown L.A. and Hollywood) as being a rather bland, working class place. But a year ago, two men who drove in from another area pulled up to a man sleeping on the sidewalk, poured gasoline on him, and set him on fire. He died.

The site of the murder is about 7 blocks from here. I have never walked near that block. I don't know if I ever will. Luckily, there are no stores or bus stops, etc. that I would use. Although homeless, the victim has family in the area who love him. His sister was on the news several times. She explained that his mental illness made him unable to cope with living in 'normal' society.

A local girl of around 13 told the reporter that she used to make fun of the man because he smelled. But that she felt "kinda bad" about it when she learned of his death.

Personally, I think it's a case of crime and appropriate punishment.

Certainly here in the UK punishment is a dirty word.

Punishment must be seen as a deterrent rather than a badge of honour before anything changes.

I know personally of people who have "done time" and have said it's no deterrent - they lived a better life "inside" than they did on the outside.

I'm not sure if I agree... if the only thing keeping someone from severely hurting another person is the fear of harsh punishment, then we are ignoring the other factors that make you even consider those types of actions.

Even if you take all punishment away, people in their right mind wouldn't light someone else on fire, there has to be many underlying issues/causes for people to do things like that.

You're right - but I don't think they meant lack of punishment is the only reason people do things, rather punishment should be an appropriate deterrent to prevent people who are likely to do things from actually carrying through with an act. Otherwise, why bother with punishment at all?

Sorry, I wasn't talking about the fire incident (I haven't watched it as I'm at work), I was talking in more general terms.

Actions and consequence was really what I guess I meant to say.

There was an incident here in the UK regarding two boys (aged about 10-11 I think) who abducted a little boy - Jamie Bulger (who was about 2-3 I think), and then tortured and murdered him. No punishment would deter such an acitivy I gree, because those boys had to be sick in the head to carry out what they did, but I would argue that we'd see a lot less crime generally if punishment was exactly that, rather than a simple containment exercise.

I agree. There's no one quick fix, but society is on the verge of a breakdown over here, in my opinion. Whenever myself and my other half go anywhere I can guarantee it won't be incident free. Usually in the form of verbal abuse, but one or both of us have been threatened - and I can honestly say we're both completely unassuming, maybe that's the problem, they can sense we won't cause them any trouble.

I totally agree with you ..... The UK is the arse end of Europe .... your point about wrong people procreating is an excellent ..... the area I work in is full of 20 year olds with 3 kids by 3 diferent fathers already, being fed, housed and paid for by the state .... it boils my blood .... we have the N.H.S in this country, free contraception ... yet we have the dregs of society shagging way through life .... spawning the next generation of spongers ... that our kids will end up paying for. This country is a disgrace

Disclaimer - I only read the thread title and haven't looked at a single post, but I can tell you exactly what is wrong with kids these days - their parents. I'm surprised the question has to be asked.

Absolutely! So well stated "something for nothing culture"
I heard a story recently about an elderly couple who were sued by a guy that broke into their home.He escaped out the window but injured himself when he fell onto their shed from the window.
    It's just so fucked up.

That happened to a kid in my old neighborhood. He is permanently crippled and scarred. He was home asleep waiting to get up for school, mom had already left for work, and a bucmch of idiots raided his house just to harm him.

    There are no easy answers.

One thing I will say is that news programmes, and news papers wouldn't sell if they reported on all the good that goes on in the world.

    Good far outweighs bad thankfully.
