Releasing another single would help sales. I’d like to see Amongst the Waves be the next single.
San Diego 10/25/00, 6/5/03, 7/7/06, 10/9/09, 11/21/13 LA 10/1/09, 11/23/13 VH1 Rock Honors 7/17/08, Hawaii 12/9/06 Bridge School 10/23/10, 10/23/11 EV 4/15/08, 4/16/08, 7/5/11, 7/8/11
It's actually holding up pretty well, relative to the last couple of Pearl Jam albums and the sales performance of rock albums in general. This is especially true given the limited availability at traditional retailers.
By the way, the #16 showing on Hits Daily Double's website is subject to change. Their sales numbers don't exactly match the official SoundScan numbers that determine the Billboard 200. (For example, HDD had "Backspacer" selling 190,000 and change the first week; SoundScan and Billboard reported 189,000.) This can lead to discrepancies in records' placement on the respective charts. (For example, last week, HDD had Paramore at #1 and Barbra Streisand at #2. Their positions were reversed in Billboard.)
One other note-- although it does not appear to affect Pearl Jam's chart position this week-- HDD includes catalog albums on its list; Billboard has a separate chart tracking them. (So, for example, "Thriller" shows up at #46 or so on HDD, but it will not appear on the Billboard 200.)
I don't know why HDD's numbers diverge from the SoundScan totals. My guess is that SoundScan does some final auditing of the numbers after 100% of retailers have reported.
As far as going gold is concerned, all it takes to earn gold certification is shipment of 500,000 units. If Pearl Jam seeks certification (and that's a big if-- usually the record company does that and pays the fees, but Pearl Jam has no record company anymore), it would probably be able to establish that at least 500,000 units were shipped. Target alone supposedly purchased 1 million copies.
One more thing. If "Just Breathe" is the next single, it has major crossover potential. Look for it to climb the rock radio charts over the next two months or so, and then begin to get added at CHR/Top 40 radio in two to three months. If that happens, you will see sales of the album markedly increase once the song hits CHR playlists.
Incidentally, "The Fixer" actually gained in airplay at rock radio last week, even though it fell to #6 on the Rock Songs chart. It was pushed back because of huge gains by Foo Fighters' "Wheels," which jumped to #2 and another song which escapes me right now.
#16 in the 3rd week I believe is pretty good from recent history, plus the decline slowed from a 70% drop to 40% week to week. Add that "Just Breathe" is obviously released as a single as KROQ spins it every 2 hours here in LA ...and steady weeks of 20K+ ahead would be pretty impressive these days..

The Fixer was added to the Hot AC charts a few weeks ago. It's doing okay. It's #47. As for the next single. Different radio stations are playing different songs. Practically the whole album is being played on various stations. Just Breathe is still hasn't gotten past #38 in the Tripe A chart.

I would think they would. It sounds better when you say you went platinum.

I think RA was out of the top 50 in week 2.
Not quite. It fell from #5 to #36 in its second week. It was out of the top 100 by week 6.
Pretty cool to see that PJ's week 1 sales far surpassed the week 1 sales of the new Kiss album, which also was an exclusive, that clocks in at # 2 this week with 104k.
Also cool to see PJ's week 2 sales numbers far exceeding the week 2 sales numbers of Alice in Chains' new album.
I do believe that the overall strength of Backspacer could give it similar sales legs to what KOL's Only by the Night has enjoyed, if PJ and its management chooses to release Just Breathe, Unthought Known or Amongst the Waves as "singles."

The Kings of Leon album has had legs because of the huge crossover success of "Use Somebody," which is still in the top 10 on the Hot 100 36 weeks after it debuted on that chart, and more than a year after it started getting played on rock radio. If "Just Breathe" gets that kind of airplay, then "Backspacer" can follow the Kings' lead.
Stone was quoted as saying they'd be making $5 per sale of Backspacer where as in the past, maybe $1 to $1.50. So if you take 281,000 in 3 weeks and multiply it out by $5, you get $1,405,000. If the band got $1.50 per CD, they'd have to sell 936,000 copies to be in the same place. So given the times where you don't sell as many, you try to get as much as you can for each one. I don't think anybody is too unhappy.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
This seems pretty typical for the last few Pearl Jam albums... a big debut week followed by a steady decline down the charts. I'd like to see it sell at least 500,000, but it's shown a pretty steep decline each successive week... at this pace, it should climb over 300,000 in Week 4.
I guess there are a few promotional pushes that could still help Backspacer's sales tally... a second single officially released to radio, Letterman appearance(s), maybe an SNL appearance? We've had a Letterman appearance for every album since No Code... hopefully that streak continues. I'm also curious why we didn't see more of the Target commercial? I think I saw it on television twice.

i think this is a good possibility. this is the only album in 10 years where i've had conversations with non-fans that are even aware they have a new album, and those that have heard it all seem to think it's pretty good. they need another single, but this album really does seem have them poised for a lot more long term success than the last 2.
it's 2009; record sales numbers are irrelevant now.
+1
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".

Releasing Got Some and Just Breathe as a double A-Side Single would be a great choice.
It would cover a lot of radio stations (rock and 'normal' music).
They also need to do some TV-Shows (Letterman and SNL) to promote the new album.
With the new deal with Target, they lose many potential buyers, since Backspacer is not available in any stores other than Target and Indipendent Stores.
They need to balance this with a good promotional campaign.
I would like to hear more Radio Stations here in L.A. play the singles "The Fixer" " Just Breathe" "Amongst The Waves"...I think KROQ and Star 98.7 are the only one playing them, i remember 95.5 KLOS, KISS FM, and 93.1 Jack FM use to support Pearl Jam but I Guess thats not the case anymore..sad...wish i could listen to ROCK 105.3 in San Diego...L.A. Radio sucks

agreed. i also think force of nature would be a decent single. but just breathe seems to have the biggest cross over appeal.
i just dont understand the whole marketing strategy with this album. they do conan 3 months before the release and then nothing? don't get it. they will be on the east coast in 2 weeks. that is when they would most likely do letterman but we havent heard anything yet

It wouldn't be right if they didn't do the Late Show

Well they are touring, that counts as marketing right? Not to mention they did record a 2 hour TV performance, that will be seen on public TV.

I'm no fields medal winner but i'll take a crack at it.
189,000 + 59,000 + 33,000 = 281,000 maybe
