I'm heading up to Jones gap next week for a 3 day backpacking/camping trip.I have done a lot of camping, but this will be my first time backpacking. I think it's about a 5 mile hike to our campsite. I got a sweet deal on some gear through 3 point 5. I got a 60L North Face (crestone) internal frame pack, Roadrunner 23 (2 person tent) with the footprint, and The North Face Blaze Aviator sleeping bag all for under $300. I would have not gotten all TNF gear ,but it was a pro deal so who wouldn't.

So I was wondering if anybody had any advice they could give me. Like what kind of food to pack or any other experiences they would care to share with me.

Thanks :)

I have a jetboil stove that is AWESOME. Lightweight, and small. Boils water within nearly a minute. Those freeze dried camping/backpacking meals are quite tasty, and filling.

i just got back from an annual thxgiving (canada) weekend ... it snowed for like 20 mins on Sunday ...

i paddled my kayak in instead of canoeing this year which made gear selection a bit more important ...

in any case - if you are just basecamping (not moving day to day) 5 mile won't be too much of a slog even if it is all uphill ... so, you can be flexible and not so picky with your gear ... if you're going with a group - split the community gear (filter, stove, pots, etc...) - make a reasonable meal plan and always have at least one or two extra meals that are light to pack ...
