I agree we should change the holiday to honor something else... but think of what else needs a name-change, namely, the District of Columbia. I don't think that would happen too easily.

At this point the holiday is kind of meaningless. All that happens is you can't go to the bank or post office and kids/teachers are home from school in some states. I'd be in favor of renaming the holiday to something else.

Yea, you KNOW it's a second-rate holiday when google won't even change their logo to commemorate it...

The poor folks in the Balkans weren't.....under Ottoman rule at the time....hey, it was a totally different world...we really shouldn't judge people from 500 years ago based on contemporary morals and standards.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

Good point. Although, I don't think rape and murder was anymore appreciated, lol.

When you live in an iron-clad society, thinking outside of the box most often resulted in a public execution. You tend to take everything that society tells you with a granite-like belief...that includes classifying those of different skin color, religion and origin as less than human....actually no better than wild animals. It's still no excuse for rape and murder, but I can see the reasoning behind some of their actions. However, folks like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot......they knew what they were doing....and that it was wrong.

  • he's more than imperialist bastard. He's a murderous genocidal maniac, who is directly responsible for the genocide of the native americans and his actions can be linked to the modern capitalist system which exploits and degrades human beings.

    Columbus is evil.

He is not a good guy.

He is a rapist. A gang rapist. A killer of animals. A person who laughed at blood being spilt, blood both human and animal

You know what really sucks? Having to ask your kids what they learned in school today and they tell you all about how Christopher Columbus believed the world was round and everyone else thought it was flat and how he 'sailed the ocean blue' and discovered the New World.

The complete and total disregard for truth in public school history is appaling.

Everyone should read a book called: Lies My Teacher Told Me. Goes into pretty good depth on the hero-worhip mentality around Columbus and how public school history books completely ignore actual, documented, historical fact.

    +1

The man was nothing to celebrate. he was never the 1st to think the World was round. He thought he was in India. He never set foot in North America. His crimes against humanity were disgusting and his own journals show a man of little regard for others.

Dump the Holiday or rename it in honor of someone more deserving. Even W. deserves a Holiday more than Columbus.
