Before you say "duh" or "obviously", I was looking up past album sales on the internet and this seems to be the trend: (this is as of 2009)

Ten-13x platinum
VS- 7x platinum
Vitalogy-5x platinum
No Code- 1x platinum
Yield- 1x platinum
Binaural- Gold (718,000 sold)
Riot Act- Gold (508,000 sold)
Avocado- Gold (706,000 sold)
Backspacer- (189,000 sold in 1st week)

Unfortunately it seems to be a downward trend. But with all the commercial advertising and Target being a big box retailer, will Backspacer buck the trend and be the first album since Yield to go platinum?

(The source for all this info is Wikipidia. In case I am wrong, blame them.)
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

Platinum status is based on shipments not actual albums sold. Some here have said that they shipped 1 million copies to Target. So if that's the case. Then it'll go platinum.

...I'd love to be wrong though.

Yea I was gonna say something about that. If this was 5 years ago. That album would already be 4 or 5x platinum.

I barely saw it. And when I did it was during late night. I was thinking they should do another one. But with snippets of songs from the album.
