Pay the Mob or go to Jail

The Senate Finance Committee is set to vote Tuesday on a health care bill that has gained preeminence over four other health care bills that have emerged from House and Senate committees. The Senate Finance bill does not include a public insurance option to compete with private insurers. Nor does it allow Medicare to use its bargaining power to negotiate lower drug prices.

Under the Finance Committee bill, Americans would be required to buy corporate health insurance or pay an ”excise tax” of $1,900. If you don’t pay that tax, the IRS could punish you with a $25,000 fine or up to one year in jail, or both. Read that again.

Under questioning last week, Tom Barthold, the chief of staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, admitted that the individual mandate would become part of the Internal Revenue Code and that failing to comply “could be criminal.” Mr. Barthold noted in a follow-up letter that the willful failure to file would be punishable by a $25,000 fine or jail time under Section 7203. Failure to pay the mandate would be enforced as tax evasion.

In the 1994 health care reform farce, the Congressional Budget Office called the individual mandate “an unprecedented form of federal action. The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States.”

The federal government has no constitutional authority to fine or imprison US citizens for refusing to buy a corporate product. This insurance mandate is a protection racket run by organized crime.

Call your representatives today – (202) 224-3121 – and tell them extortion is a felony.

  • Where is E.V's outcry on this one? Love the music, hate the lean. Totally rediculous. Great post! You can no longer "blame Bush" on this one. :x
  • Oh please.

You're citing a freaking Wordpress blog? Yeah, there's a great source for news and facts.

Why don't you just say "I heard down at the barber shop?"

honestly, if you're going to be trying to run in with this big flag to wave can you at least get one from a reputable new source?

  • "One of the proposed health care bills..."

That's all I need to know.

Just more hysteria from the right.. oh.. and that's the "Baucus BIll" which was written by a guy who gets MILLIONS of dollars from the health care industry. So it would make sense that he'd write a draft filled with things to incite your easily incitable sensibilities.

You really need to know when you're being manipulated.

you should've known that from the first sentence of my OP

regardless not that long ago you argued none of the bills said that and anyone who thought different was full of crap, now you're changing your argument to 'well, it's only 1 bill that says it'??

i like this plan less the more i hear about it. while i do give baucus some credit for trying to get some bill put out there and being willing to work civilly and compromise so they can get everyone on board, the result is none too impressive. essentially, it serves only to exacerbate our current problems. no curb on the power of health insurance companies. rather than including anything to lower prices or standardize service practices, this basically takes the same system we have, adds a few more people to medicare, and then forces everyone else to buy the same shitty, overpriced, unworkable product we already have.

Ignore the Baucus Bill. It was meant to suck. It was written by someone supported by the health care cartels.
  • Here's a link from the New York Times, it's about a week old.

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009 ... html#tab=0

    "UPDATED Oct. 7, 2009
    Comparing the Health Care Proposals
Three committees in the House and two in the Senate have been working on legislation to overhaul the nation's health care system. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and each of the three House panels approved their bills before Congress’s August recess. House leaders are now working with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California, to distill from the three bills one package that will go to the House floor. The Senate Finance Committee wrapped up debate on its proposal last week and is expected to vote on the bill soon. How the measures compare on some key issues:

    Individual Mandates
    Employer Contributions
    Insurance Exchange
    Public Plan
    Subsidies for Individuals
    Subsidies for Employers
    Expanding Medicaid
    Defining Minimum Benefits
    What It Will Cost
    Raising Revenue
    Cutting Costs "

When you click on the link, you can click on all of the components above for a brief summary of the House version, Senate Health Committee, and Senate Finance Committee . Plus, it states where the White House may stand on a particular issue.

House version, Senate Health Committee, and Senate Finance Committee all have a mandate.

you can't ignore it. it has too much momentum in the senate and they look ready to ram this one through because it's the only way they can avoid a political bloodbath. this isn't even about partisanship anymore, it's about incumbency. it's a bill the dems can pass to say they did something and the republicans can water down enough to tell their voters they kept government in check but still fixed everything. everyone gets to pat themselves on the back and everyone can get re-elected. and that's all that matters to anyone important. the dems don't have the spine to stand firm on a public option and the republicans don't have any ideas for anything better, so this is what we are likely to get. a bizarre, meaningless bill that is expensive and will do nothing in the long run to fix the problem. it's a band-aid for political convenience to avoid having to put any congressmen out of office by either facing the fury of the right if they stand firm or the disgust of the left if they do nothing.

actually, y'all are still mad as fucking hatters unfortunately. and just becos i'm a bit underwhelmed with the leading health care proposal on the table doesn't mean i'm gonna run out to march with a bunch of yahoos that think obama is a foreign born muslim and are now protesting outside a grade school over a ridiculous song performed a year ago.

i WANT a public option. my beef with the plan is that it doesn't have one. i don't give a damn about this tax/penalty thing. they do the same thing with auto insurance.

    not for this but
I thought I read the new bill and by 2013 everyone must carry a health plan or be penalized via tax return reporting. That penalty is at a maximum of 750$ to be paid over 4 years time.
Absolutely no jailtime is possible- if I was reading the correct bill online yesterday after it was voted in.
There were hundreds of pages, which of course I scanned over- I was interested due to our small business,
thinking another way to screw with us.

you marched in Washington because you're bat shit crazy and buy all the conspiracy theories fed to you. You're easily manipulated so big business has tricked you into fighting against your own best interests so they can continue to make billions of bucks by ripping you off.

    but thanks for playing.

We may be mad but isn't it about time? I have not protested any schools, but yes I do wonder why Obamas has sealed many parts of his past? What happened with the transparency he campaigned about?
Their plan is just going to jack up my insurance premium
Medicaid will lose a massive amount of funding so it’s what we said all along. The older citizens are going to get less funding which will lead the government to ration care. I would rather have my choice of whom I’m going to get screwed by, than have the government choose for me.

We are trying to organize to vote every one out of the White house right or left and lifers. The civil servants in the white house are not in touch with the average American anymore, we have been too trusting and they have taken advantage of that. Why the name calling?
