gonna get the fam a video camera for christmas, mainly because we're having our first baby in the spring, and I want to capture this girl's life on tape.

What brand, any specs I need to look for? I never owned a video camera in my life, not even the old 80's models. So keep it basic for me.

Whatever you do, do not tape the birth.. You will scar the child and anyone who ever watches it for life. 8-)

Old videos are fun! A few years ago I saw one from when I was about seven in 1986 and it was haunting.. just don't go overboard with the recording. They can get boring to watch after a few minutes.

Canon is a pretty solid brand. try to get a HV20 or an HV30. you definitely want to stick with mini-DV. but the good thing is that these record in HD. the HV20 may be a little harder to find but the HV30 is last year's model, so it should be in the $600 range by now. I've got one and couldn't be happier with it. good luck.

www.camcorderinfo.com is also a good site if you want to keep searching.
