Can someone shed light on Johnny 'Guitar' Watson for me?

Being from Australia we've never, or should i say, ive never heard of him (pardon my ignorance).

Just trying to get a grasp on this song and how it fits in with the rest of the album. Is that him on the cover on the mini bike?

I see they've played it live a few times. Do they play it well?

Just returned from Europe and have been listening to the album. Sorry if ive missed previous threads!

  • I'm curious as well. The other night Eddie mentioned it was inspired by something read on a bathroom wall.

This interview gives some tidbits on the inspiration of the songs:

Do you have "Backspacer"? On the cover, bottom row in the middle. That'll give you some idea of the actual Watson album cover (an image of which can be found in another thread).

Do they play it well? From what seen online, they rock the shit out of it 8-)

  • you should wikipedia him... interesting life and death...

lp was on bathroom wall... funny how the song isnt so much about him as it is about the kid (singer) falling in love w one of the lady's on the cover...

...if you ask me this is like ed's version of "pictures of lilly" by the who...sort of...or at least it reminds me of that song
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...
  • wow, as the saying goes, he died with his boots on.

  • I first became aware of JGW when he guested on the Frank Zappa album "Them Or Us", apparently he was one of Franks heroes. Check out the track "In France", it's pretty funny unless, I guess, you're from France.
  • The man was a total Player way before hip hop copped that title. He was a rock and roll pimp, with most his songs being about getting laid or sexy women. He sang in a really sexy voice and played his guitar liked it was his lover. He did the songs "Love Jones" and "Superman Lover" to name a couple. He was definitely a major influence on alot of musicians.
“The love received is the love that is saved.”
