I went to an Uncles funeral this past week (had two Uncles pass within a few months of each) and it feels like more of a family reunion because thats the only time we see each other. Anyone have the same experience?

that's exactly how i felt this past february when my mom's parents passed away a week apart from one another. i don't go home all that often...and haven't really seen much of my extended family due to work and such...it was just unfortunate to see them under such sad circumstances.

Yes, I can relate. That's the only time I see most of my extended family. Well that and weddings. :P

I like to pick up chicks at funerals. (The ones that aren't related to me.)

I went to an open-casket viewing for the first time a few months back. It didn't phase me too much, but had it been a close relative, I am sure I would have been balling.

I've wept at the funerals of people I had never met (went to support friends, etc.), so I wonder how I will hold up when I attend the funeral of someone with whom I was very close.

Frick. I went to a funeral for my friends 3 year old little girl yesterday. We've all been pretty shaken since she got sick and obviously when she passed but the funeral was probably the saddest hour of my life to date.

The worst part is that she was fine one day, sick the next and passed away a week later. It was some sort of a virus that nobody had seen before (the aggression of it anyway). Super sad story.

Yes, and it seems so disrespectful, yet everyone does it. It is the only time family and friends, all at once, are all together. My son-in-law died 2 year ago. He had a 3 day viewing. I stayed all 3 days, 'cuz it was my grandson's dad and my daughter's guy and I was worried about them. Anyway, I was seeing people I hadn't seen in years. Then they were seeing each other, etc. My sister saw her first husband who she hadn't seen in 35 years. Weird stuff.
On the last day, after they got him out of there, the next funeral moved right in and it was someone we knew too. That was really weird, cuz now I am seeing people from a different part of my life than the ones that were at my sons-in-law funeral.

Oh well its the way it goes.

OMG! That is so sad! I wouldn't know how to be. OMG! That is awful. I am so sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with you and her loved ones.

My 6 year old grandson went to his dad's and was trying to open his mouth. They sew it shut, so he looked up and asked me, "does he still have a tongue?". I didn't know how to handle all the questions he had. I didn't choose for him to be there, his mom did, but she wasn't in her right mind either. My ex and I just dealt with it as it happened, but that kid will have weird thoughts for some time.

I've never been to a Childs funeral and hopefully never will, that would be aweful.
But for people who have had a full life it's different

2 years ago my Dad died and we had a great time at his wake. We all said we have to gather more often for something other than Funeral's. So a year later I threw a masive dress-up party for no reason and they were all there. I threw another masive party last October and they were all there again.

My Mother inlaw passed away last march. We all ended up swimming in the pool in our undies and had a great bonding session.

My mum died last August, before she passed away we partied in her Paliative care room, drinking wine and smoking weed until 4am. At her wake...........well it's a bit fuzzy cause it was champagne from 9 am till whatever time I went to bed, but I do recall us all having alot of fun.

I think it's ok to cellebrate someones life, but man I miss them.

A child's funeral is the worst experience I've ever had. My niece's daughter was only 2 days old when she died. I don't think I've ever felt so forlorn and useless in my life. I'm even welling up thinking about it now and it was 8 years ago.

Not disrespectful at all. Funerals don't have to be sad and somber affairs. Obviously there is grief but the getting together and remembering the deceased can be full of joy and fun as well. At my grandmother's funeral there was a lot of singing and dancing... remembering how my grandmother used to get on the tables and dance (even at a grand old age) when she had a lil' drop too much! A real celebration of her life.... My mother died a couple of years ago.. same there.. the extended family from all over Europe was there and there was laughter too.

I was at a week-old baby's funeral last year (cord wrapped around her neck during delivery -- the doctors couldn't get her out fast enough). It was very difficult too. Hopefully I don't go to any more funerals of anybody younger than me until I'm 70 or so -- they are really tough but they do make you realize how lucky you are to have healthy kids.

I went to a wake for someone my age yesterday (early 30s). It was very difficult. But at the same time, all these old friends from high school were there, and in a lot of ways not much has changed. Seeing all of the friendly faces did help with everyone's emotions I think. And I think for close family members, the family/friend reunion type atmosphere can really help take their minds off things, and it is a good reminder that people are still there for them. It's sad but I think in some ways funerals can bring people close together.

I agree. I feel like that's part of the point of a funeral.
