Not at all.. It's a great song to a 37 minute album. I was blown away when the last album came out and I heard "Come Back" I was thinking oh sh$t Eddie is singing the Blues to us... That's how they do it, rock n roll ya then take you to a deeper thought....

All the songs that made it to the album are the ones Pearl Jam wanted to be there, so they all belong on the album. Simple.
While I do respect the discussion, that's kinda like asking if Mona Lisa needed that smile or if Starry Night should have had a black sky rather than blue. It's what the artist intended - for reasons known only to them. How they work for you is obviously open to personal opinion.
Both The End and Just Breathe are beautiful, haunting songs that have really captured an emotion, a moment, a desire. (Check out the discussion about the line about 'leaving the kids' and how those of us that are parents have responded to that thought.) They totally change the pace of the album and sonicly probably would be equally at home on ITW, lyrically I don't think so, but they work for me on Backspacer. I'm loving seeing them played back to back.
Although I do believe, after seeing Mike on fire these last two nights in LA - the next pearl jam album should have a 36 bar guitar solo on every song.
Good song..Just seems like it doesnt quite fit on the album. I am begining to like the End quite a bit.
i did at first, but now it has kinda clicked for me. it seemed like a weird insertion of an into the wild b-side mid-album, but it actually is a much better song than i gave it credit for and it's a nice game changer after the breakneck opening transitioning into the more anthemic second half.
i still don't care for the end though. i don't dislike it like i did at first, but i feel it's kinda redundant and melodramatic.
fuck that bullshit about the "flow of the album"!! an awesome song always has a place on an album!! an album is a collection of songs...each song telling a story, and they don't have to necessarily "fit/go together"...i don't know why people assume this...it's not a fucking "theme album"!
I think of it as the end to side 1....its perfect in that respect....just been listening to the new boots....its pretty stunning live.
:geek: It's not really the end of side 1 though, Amongst the Waves is the last song on that side of the record.
While it's clear this song was originally done for Into the Wild, I don't feel it's out of place on Backspacer. It's a beautiful start to a succession of songs that are my three favorites from the album right now. I just wish they would have all been on the same side of the record.
I had a feeling I'd be in the minority on this one. I'm not trying to tell PJ or anyone how to pick the best songs or sequence the songs for an album. Just expressing my fleeting opionions. I'm glad we have this board..Did you know that the Counting Crows have made their forum for Fan Club members only?
I guess Adam Duritz couldnt handle the criticism of "non-fans"....

"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”

Just Breathe and The End feel like Eddie moments but are great songs.
I've been thinking if e hadn't seen Lost Dogs, this would be a killer tracklist:
All Night
Gonna See My Friends
Got Some
The Fixer
Johnny Guitar
Just Breathe
Amongst the Waves
Unthought Known
Supersonic
Force of Nature
Down
The End
