The latest RIP IT UP magazine in NZ is a Pearl Jam special...Eddie is guest editor (but i should stress I would have to use this term loosely, its basically just a small excerpt on ed).....There is a great article on the whole band...a small piece on ed talking about the history of Alive, STBC, off he goes, last kiss and The Fixer...a page of great ed quotes....a review of Backspacer giving it 4/5 and piece that I guess you could call "the essential pearl jam by writer Gina Williams"....

So heres Miss Williams guide to PJ...and I quote....

START HERE= TEN (91) "its complex arrangements recall great years of yore such as Hendrix and Zep, yet it is self-aware enough not to fall into stadium rock territory"

FOLLOW WITH= VITALOGY (94) "vitalogy saw a minimalist, stripped back, original, yet stubborn album"

THEN GET= VS. (93) "a band clearly learning to deal with their newly acquired fame"

THE WILD CARD= RIOT ACT (02) "RA saw PJ retreat to their Vitalogy days, with just the right amount of burly art rock that hits the listener hard"

AVOID= YIELD (98) "despite one non status quo moment on the spoken word "push and pull me", its a rather straightforward effort"

ADVANCED LISTENING= Bootlegs "hundreds to wade through"

End of quotes...back to me...wow is all i can say....AVOID YIELD....one word...WRONG.....!!!
Must say for most PJ fans i think theres really nothing new in this PJ edition of Rip It Up...Pretty disappointing.

to think that she may prevent someone from hearing Yield... that's a crime, seriously. I agree with Riot Act, too. Best fall album ever, listening to it at work right now. But avoid Yield? I want to punch her! ;)

Yield aint that great IMO. Save Brain of J, Faithful, GTF & In Hiding I dont find it very interesting. I know I am in the minority on this one but it is actually possible to put yield behind the other albums :)

    Best. Night. Ever.
  • the list should go

Start With: Ten, shows you how this band hit the scene and made the impact it did

Follow Up: the rest of their albums in chronological order, this will show you how the band has evolved

Wild Card: Lost Dogs, some rareties and b-sides, definitely worth a listen or two

Skip: RVM greatest hits, all songs you've heard before, nothing new, however some of the songs are alternate recordings so...actually don't skip it...you might want to check it out.
  • f that Yield is one of the best.

Yield got me into PJ - being too young when the other albums were released, and early teens when Yield came out, it was the starting point for me, and a great one at that!
Take me for a ride before we leave...

    wow....seriously?

    here's what you do....

    start with reviewmirror.

then listen to the albums in order. they pretty much tell the story of the band.

    end with lost dogs.

if there was a direct link between the adoration of Yield and Moronness, most of the PJ population would be morons...so you're not alone

Slating Yield with a throwaway remark? Rubbish! Describing Riot Act, as a 'wildcard', and relating it back to Vitalogy? Strange. And talking about Vs in terms of "a band clearly learning to deal with their newly acquired fame"? What does that actually tell you about the music on the record? Nothing! Of course, her opinion is her opinion...but it's no more valid than yours or mine. And as far as I can see, she hasn't contributed anything particularly interesting or helpful in writing this.
Try to tell me that you love me, throw your little punches at me...
  • Anyone who says avoid Yield doesn't know shit about Pearl Jam.
  • You must be high and I dont mean in a good way.. Yield is awesome....
