WOW! I've seen a at least 5-6 posts now about folks taking their kids to their first concerts this tour! How awesome! In my case, while my daughter liked a lot of the old soft stuff (and has heard it all enough, both on CD and my bashin it out on guitar) -- it really was Backspacer that turned the corner, and not just Just Breath, Speed of Sound or the ballads, her fav is Johnny Guitar with Supersonic a close 2nd!!!

But she likes the whole freakin' album, and that's so cool!

So while I know you all want more Lost Dogs, No Code, Yield and what not -- be happy that Backspacer is potentially hookin up a brand new wave of fans to the band. Takes time to get through the back catalog, let 'em enjoy the songs that got 'em to the show! I'm sure this happens every tour, but it really is a special moment to be there with a brand new fan, especially when you, you know, actually CREATED that fan! Hehehe.

In that vein -- so awesome her first concert ever was LA2 with EIGHT of the new tracks!!!

And now in San Diego, saw sooo many "parents" with kids at the show in the 8-12 age I'd guess.

Dude in merch line with his kids working over their order, checkin out my keychain.

    "Hmmm t-shirt or key-chain dad?"
"You won't need that keychain for a long while!"

At the SD show there were parents with their 2 kids in the row behind me. The kids were both asleep for more than half of the show. Why bother?

    Road trip from NJ

Had my 9 year old at LA4
    6 year old at SD

Best feeling watching their faces and recognizing songs. They love backspacer. The 6 year old was giving it to the 9 year old because he got Johnny Guitar in SD which is the oldest's favorite.

acutejam I'm glad you were able to bring your daughter to the show! :D

But seriously, what's with the kids falling asleep at PJ shows! It is LOUD and is meant for rocking out! You told me that your daughter fell asleep. Well, I have a friend (who shall remain nameless--though he did post in this thread lol!) and he LEFT LA night 4 EARLY because his son fell asleep! AAAAH! I called him after the show and told him that not only did he miss Chris Cornell coming back, but that all of Soundgarden came onstage and played "Spoonman." He freaked lol. Eventually I told him I was teasing.

Luckily in SD he stayed for the whole show!

I left 2 minutes early to make sure we got a cab, HE did not want to go. And that was NOT funny (Well maybe a little... )

  • Though I did not bring my children to the latest show, in Salt Lake City. There were kids there. It was great to see them enjoy the show. What was even better was Ed and the band seamed to have fun with the kids. Acknowledging them and Ed was taken back by their presence. He even excused him self when cussing, and suggested that they take the day off the next day but stay in school! I was comical and a wonderful interaction. I will not let my kids miss the next time they are in the mid (South) west. Though, 7,5, and 2 are a little old now, they will get a few shows in.

    strong work!

Yeah -- kids do that. They fall asleep anywhere -- having not the tools to combat it (ie -- no caffine for her). C'mon you don't remember that totally heavy eyelid sensation, head-nods, fighting to stay awake and you just can't? Think: High School?

In my daughter's defense, just too much build-up and excitement! Travelin' w/ Dad! Getting outta school early, plane ride, checkin out the hotel, checkin out Citywalk, the build up of the show, merch line, Ben Harper, 1st set, 2nd set -- yep, down she goes for "ALIVE!!!!" hehehe, the moment the song stopped she popped back up and rocked Ledbetter and sang the national anthem! And yeah, then we're up til midnite easy....

But sleeping for half the show ... those are kids who don't wanna be there. I didn't see any of that.

in San Diego, there was a boy on his dad's shoulders, singing along...he couldn't have been older than 10!!! they had a sign that it was his first show, and it was awesome to see that bond when a song would start and dad would look up and smile at the kid who was soooo happy :-)
Need a tour Travel Agent??? Pick me :-)

Whatever you are, be a good one --Lincoln
  • Do NOT bring your kids to shows- it is not a place for kids. "watch out for my kid!" "sit down my kid cant see" "dont smoke pot around my kid"! blah blah blah...and all the cursing in the songs on top, not to mention your kids hearing.

All good points, 'cept the first one. I think there's an age where kids would even begin to appreciate a concert, esp at current ticket prices, but I'm talking KIDS WHO WANT TO GO and beg us to take them. I never had to tell any of the surrounding 10C members a damn thing -- I ASKED if we could switch seats (and was denied, no biggie), and ASKED if folks could see around her if she stood on the seat (folks were gracious about that) -- but she had scoped out viewlines anyways.

She knows about drugs, thinks pot smelled gross -- and it was only around us at the beginning. I kept a nose up for that and would have moved had it persisted. I would have taken action myself to change our situation, not made others change their actions.

Cursing? Oh her poor innocent ears!?!?! Please, she listens to Pearl Jam! But some of our favorite moments were looking at each other and rolling our eyes as she would scold him at each F-Bomb ... "Eddie..."

Hearing? I work in heavy industry and actually brought 3 different hearing protection devices - foam, gel, and big o' pink cans! She went with the cans!

Concerts are what the fans make them.

And yeah, my biggest concern WAS winning the lottery! As big of fans as she and I are, I would still have marched back and swapped with someone further back with a good view....

Young kids- probably not a good idea
but I took my 16 year old on a road trip last summer to Hartford and Mansfield - that was awesome,
and I am taking my 13 year old in two weeks to Philidelphia from Ontario
    they will never forget it
    and neither will I

I know I have talked about it before, but: We took our boys, then nine and eleven, to Mansfield 1 last year. All four of us were pounding on the chairs and screaming our heads off during "Betterman," and that might have been the most fun our family ever has had.

Yes, people were smoking "stuff." We had warned our older son about this, and explained that it was part of the concert-going experience. People around us asked before lighting up, which was cool, but we would not have told them "no."

Language: Yeah, well, they have heard the bootlegs. My now-ten-year-old has tried to use the "f-word,' with the excuse that "Eddie uses it." I told him that when he is as successful as Ed, he can use it, too. At any rate, back in the dark ages, when I was ten and in public school, I heard worse language on the playground.

We all are going to all four Philly shows, and the boys are almost as excited as I am. The ten-year-old now says his costume for the 31st will be "Darth Vedder." I have no idea what that means.

It might be an issue for super small kids, but you will NOT deny me my Pearl Jam rights! :) As a minor myself, I'll go through this.

"Watch out for my kid": I guess I could see this as a problem in some cases, but come on! If they're small enough to be pushed around, parents will be able to carry them!

"Sit Down": OK, you have my permission to get pissed at THAT guy. :)

"Don't Smoke": Rough, but if they're anywhere past 13, they've probably smelled some in the school bathroom already.

"Cursing": OK, I go to an awesome school in a great neighborhood in a great town, and I had heard EVERYTHING by the time I was 7 or 8. Unless I have haven't heard something by now, which I doubt, since I'm in High School. :)

    "Hearing": Um, earplugs. Nuff said

So there you go. I guess I DO see your point about very little kids, but if they WANT to be there, they and their parents WILL deal.

So as an added bonus from taking my kids to the shows, the teacher sends home my 1st graders writing assignments for the week. They have to make up something with pictures and a description. So for the week before/after the concert, his entries were (and I am seriously cleaning up the spelling):

Jeff playing his guitar at SD show
    Stone jumping during Unthought Known
Eddie playing at home in SD
Eddie changing setlist to play Supersonic
Jeff flying home with me from SD

    Got an A too.

    Made me so proud :D

Ah awesome stories popping up now! Great to hear 'em all -- yeah, meeting new friends, going with old friends, hanging wiht the spouse is all very fun and cool -- but nuthin like going with your kids. Just super fun!

    NICE ART PROJECT B-Diamond!

Better than the T-shirts, stickers, posters and photos we got from the show is my lil girl's drawing of the band that she did on the hotel notepad after the show!!! Simply my favorite concert memorabilia now! Scrapbook!
