    Nope.
  • ???

The Pirates have a 50% attendance, averaging 19,479 per game. Only Florida and Okland have lower totals.

Do they even have a semi-pro basketball team?

The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh doesn't count.

Add two more professional sports teams and then we might be able to talk...

ohh wait you already have a baseball team, that no one cares about. ;)

5/23/2011- An utter embarrassment... ticketing failures too many to list.
  • I would have to go with Boston.

Only the Bruins at 97% attendance don't sellout.

Yes, Boston fans may be obnoxious but that doesn't make it any less than Pittsburgh.
  • BOSTON!
Drop, drop, dropping it down...oh, so gently...

  • The only die-hard fans in Pittsburgh are Steeler fans.

Yeah, unless basketball and a real baseball team were there I might consider it...but it's a joke otherwise.

It's easy to say but if they left it up to me I'd say Chicago and Boston are up there.
Both have teams with long histories, die-hard fans, and more than two teams....
  • Pittsburgh does have college sports over on Boston. However, I'm gonna say that no town is a better sports town than Boston. The entire city breathes sports.

i'm guessing only because they have the defending NHL and NFL champs. yeah, Pitt is nice for college.

I would put Philly, Boston, NY, & Chicago above pittsburgh. heck, I'd might even put Detroit above them.

Don't discount BC football, the many boston college hockey & basketball teams.

Talking colleges Boston could be the top college city in the country.

if you are taking college into account Philly would get a huge jump as we have 6 Division 1 basketball teams - put their average attendances together and it over 20,000 per night for college hoops. Phillies sold out all but 3 games, Eagles selll out all. Flyers pretty much sell out every game. Only the Sixers don't have great attandance.

wait, what? You got Pitt. and what else ... Duquesne? Am I missing something? If you said Philly, I might have bought in because of the number of colleges there, but Pittsburgh?

No doubt Pitt has produced some great football players, but, so has BC ...

Then, there's hockey .... Boston is probably the best city for college hockey, as witnessed by the last two national champions ...

I would put Detroit ahead of them, all 4 of their teams draw well and the Michigan Wolverines football sells out.

I would think you have to have all 4 major sports to be considered.

but, you're gonna catch a ton of shit for the Lions.

These always turn into pissing matches

What is the criteria for the "BEST" Sports City ?

    Sell-Outs ? Championships ? Winning Pct of teams ?

It's all subjective and stupid IMO

  • Pittsburgh:

    Football - Top 5
    Hockey - Top 5
    Baseball - BASEMENT
    Basketball - NONE
College - POOR, when Pitt loses look in the stands... is anyone at the games?

    Boston:

    Football - Top 3 (#1?)
    Hockey - Top 5
    Baseball - Top 3 (#2?)
    Basketball - Top 3
College - Top 3 (I'd say #1, when you think "college town" it is Boston)

Chicago and New York are also cleary better sports town than Pittsburgh. Probably Philly.
Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.
  • I'd say that Pitt has a better tradition in the Major College sports. I lived in Boston, people there are pro sports people. It may be a college town, but it has 1 major program in major sports. BC just isn't that great. The northeast with a few exceptions is Pro sports driven.

It is a subjective debate. The real debate should be, is "X" a sports town. Because you have places like Chicago and Boston. Then you have Jacksonville or Phoenix.

  • It's just because of the two titles... look at the previous winners.

I'm from Pittsburgh and I wouldn't consider it the best sports city. It's smaller than most, so take that into consideration when looking at attendance numbers.

Steelers are about as good as you can get in football

Penguins have a good base of hardcore fans (they averaged 11,000+ the year before the lockout when they had a defensemen that no one ever heard of leading the team in points (Dick Tarnstrom) and only won 23 games...

The Pirates are a whole 'nother story... It's sad, because when I was in High School, they were good, and the city supported them... 17 losing season later, and they are as irrelevant as any pro team could be. I can't blame any fans for giving up on that team, every ownership group that they had during that time has given up on it.

In my opinion any fan who still follows a team after that long isn't die-hard, but instead just stupid, and doesn't have a problem throwing money away.

A perfectly brilliant comment right there.

I would have to go with Beantown as a all around top sports city, that could change next year though.

I think the NBA is more popular than the NHL... :?

or maybe I think that because Utah doesn't have a professional hockey team...

Are we talking fan loyalty and atmosphere or success of local teams? If its fan loyalty, fanaticism or whatever then yeah, it might be pittsburgh or boston. But if we're talking local team success then its LA.

Boston sports teams also have a regional edge not just the Boston city area. They have New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and parts of Connecticut oh you could through in Rhode Island. It ALL adds up to a pretty vast area don't ya think.
