bike maintenance

Anybody here know anything about general bike maintenance? I haven't touched my Trek mountain bike in a year or more. Should I completely degrease my chain and sprocket and re-lube? Any other maintenance? Now that I won't die of heat stroke just after starting to pedal I'd like to use it again.
